CAT VARC Preparation: What are Clauses?

A clause is taken as an element of the sentence that comprises a verb. It consists of both a subject and a base. The predicate or base can be regarded as a verb phrase. It comprises only one subject along with a verb. But the subject of the clause is invisible. On the other hand, the verb is visible.

Type of Clauses:

Basically, the type of clauses is divided into two parts. One is the Independent Clause and another is the Dependent Clause. The Independent Clause is defined as a complete sentence whereas the Dependent Clause is considered incomplete. In the below section, two clauses are mentioned in detail.

  • Independent Clause: It is the primary clause and it conveys important views that are meaningful. And it comprises one subject and one verb. No other sentences are required with these sentences. To create composite sentences, these clauses can join with the other two clauses. These clauses are considered complete.
  • Dependent Clause: These clauses are defined as a supportive clause. This cause is not used singly. Though it comprises a subject and a verb, it does not include a complete view. The idea which is defined by this clause is considered incomplete.
