CAT VARC Preparation process can be easy if all the sections are practiced thoroughly. Among all the sections, reading comprehension carries the maximum weightage i.e ¾ of the section. The topic article should be covered while going through the grammar as one should be clear with all the basics before starting the CAT preparation. The section is the fundamental and principal part of English Language in CAT Preparation.

As per CAT VARC Syllabus, questions will not be directly asked from this topic but will be based on that therefore right knowledge of the topic is must. To secure a high score in CAT 2021, candidates need to build up a basic idea on the Article section. In this article, definition, type and the usage of articles along with some sample questions are mentioned. 

CAT VARC Preparation: What is Article?

Articles can be explained as a member of a list of words that helps to reform nouns and also mark the particular word. It functions to mark the noun type. 

• There are three articles i.e A, An and The. Among them “the” is added to a particular word or noun. It cannot be used as a collective form. 
• Apart from that, articles “a” and “an” are placed only before the non specific word. It does not have any particular value. Based on the vowel and non-vowel words, one can use “a” or “an”. 
• On the other hand, “an” can be placed before the word that is framed with a vowel or a particular letter that sounds like a vowel.

What are the Types of Articles?

There are two types of articles i.e Definite and Indefinite articles. 

Definite Articles

In this section, “the” can be defined as the only definite article. It can be considered as a particular noun or object. Adding “the” to a particular word is concluded as a particular value. 

For example: Do you want to visit the place this sunday?

• This sentence defines that you want to go to a specific place. Here, “The” refers to the particular object. 
• This article is seen in countries like the United Kingdom, United States of America or Republic. For instance, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, The Republic of Congo, and many more. 

Indefinite Articles

Indefinite Articles are specified as “a” and “an” ; these are placed only before the words that are used collectively. Based on the usage of the word, this article is used in a sentence. These articles must be placed before the singular noun. For plural nouns, any one of definite articles and “the” can be placed. 

For example: John is a sportsperson. 

In this sentence, the person’s identity is defined. 

Article Usage with singular consonants:

• Please give me a pen from the box.
• My friend is a doctor.

Article Usage with singular vowels:

• Marking any sentence with an ink pen will help to memorise those writing samples.
