CAT VARC Preparation: What are Parts of Speech?

Parts of Speech is defined as the category of words that contains uniform grammatical resources. It explains the usage of words in any sentence. 

  • There are eight parts of speech in the grammar portion of the English Language. 
  • Those are Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.
  • When a word is used in various situations the usage of a word can be more functional. In this way, a similar word is used as a noun in a sentence. 
  • And an adjective can be used in another sentence. 
  • All the forms of parts of speech are defined below.

What is a Noun?

A noun can be used in place of a person, animal, thing, place, idea or quality. There are seven usages of nouns such as a person, animal, thing, place, idea or quality. And it categorised into seven forms like Common Nouns, Proper Nouns, Concrete Nouns, Abstract Nouns, Countable Nouns, Non-countable Nouns and Collective Nouns. 

For example:

  • Pitter is my brother.
  • Jenny lives in Auckland.

What are Pronouns?

Pronouns act as a noun. It is also be placed in the place of a noun. It is categorised into eight parts like Personal Pronouns, Relative Pronouns, Possessive Pronouns, Reflexive Pronouns, Intensive Pronouns, Demonstrative Pronouns, Interrogative Pronouns and Indefinite Pronouns. 

For example:

  • Alisha is a famous singer. She sings very well.
  • Whose pen is this?

What is Verb?

A verb is defined as a part of speech that represents action or happenings. It is one of the most important parts of any sentence. It is called the pillar of any sentence. There are four types of a verb such as intransitive, transitive, linking, and passive. 

For example:

  • Rita gave Marie the pen.
  • Her dog bites her friend on the hand.

What is an Adjective?

The adjective defines a noun or pronoun. Apart from that, an adjective redesigns a noun or pronoun by narrating or marking it.

The seven forms of adjectives are Descriptive Adjective, Quantitative Adjective, Demonstrative Adjective, Possessive Adjective, Interrogative Adjective, Distributive Adjective and Articles.

For example:

  • That’s his shoe.
  • The pretty girl was wearing a pink dress.

What is an Adverb?

A part of speech that describes the verb or adjective in the sentence is known as an adverb. One can say, an adverb modifies or describes a verb or adjective or another adverb. Adverbs generally end with –ly. Adverbs of Degree, Adverbs of Frequency, Adverbs of Manner, Adverbs of Place, Adverbs of Time and Add Adverb are the major categories of adverbs.

For example:

  • When do you normally have your dinner?
  • Pitter recently visited the Basilica of Bom Jesus.

What is Preposition?

Prepositions are used to build up a connection either between a noun and a pronoun or between a phrase and a word in a sentence. Noun or pronoun always follows the preposition. But the verb never follows it. Prepositions are categorised into 5 forms are Simple Prepositions, Double Prepositions, Compound Prepositions, Participle Prepositions and Phrase Prepositions.

For example:

  • She closed the door. 
  • The book was kept on the table.

What is Conjunction?

Conjunctions are used to connect more than two words or phrases. It defines the connection between the joined sentences. 

For example:

  • She had both a burger and pizza.
  • I like the kitten but not the cat.

What is Interjection?

Words that are used to express emotion are called interjections. In other words, an interjection is an emotional greeting or exclamation. They express strong feelings and emotions. 

For example:

  • Alas! We lost gifts.
  • Oh! That is painful.

Below are some tips for the preparation of CAT VARC. 

  • Cover all the topics as per the syllabus and try to include parts of speech in every topic of CAT VARC syllabus to understand it in a better way.
  • Note down the main points from the topics and practice daily.
  • Read good books for vocabulary and grammar.
  • Try to solve all the questions from the previous year’s paper and sample paper to clear your concepts and to get an idea about the type of questions asked in the paper. 
  • Take CAT mock test at least thrice a week.
