CAT Quantitative Aptitude Section Wise Preparation Tips and Tricks

Topic Tips and Tricks
How to Prepare for CAT Arithmetic?
  • Start from topics like Percentages, Profit and Loss, SI & CI, Ratios, Mixtures.
  • Keep the time taking topics like Averages, Speed, Time, Distance, Races, Pipes Cisterns & Time work for the last.
  • Sequence the arithmetic topics then it becomes easier for you to understand the concepts.
  • Like, pick SI first then pick CI.
Preparation tips for CAT Number System
  • Number Systems is a very vast topic and each year almost 1-3 questions are asked in the CAT exam.
  • Some of the topics covered under Number Systems include Factors and Multiples, HCF and LCM, Factorials, Base Systems, Remainders and Miscellaneous topics.
  • There is no specific technique or short trick to remember Number theory topics.
  • You need to understand the basics.
  • Make sure you know all the rules and start doing different kinds of questions to get a broader understanding of the same.
How to Prepare for CAT Geometry?
  • Geometry is an important section as the majority of questions (almost 6-8) are asked in CAT.
  • With clear basics, you can easily shape the entire learning process.
  • Learning concepts from theorems is an ideal and more appropriate manner of understanding the working of different shapes.
  • Knowing which idea will be applied for any particular question is important to crack the question Geometry CAT exam.
How to Prepare for CAT Algebra?
  • CAT Algebra is another crucial topic following Arithmetic.
  • While doing CAT preparation, one need to get involved in working with variables, the x’s y’s etc.
  • Some of the important topics included in this section include Linear & Quadratic Equations, Inequalities, Functions, Progressions, Algebraic Expressions to Polynomials.

CAT Quantitative Aptitude Modern Maths Sample Questions

Question: How many 3-digit numbers are there, whose product is greater than 2 but less than 7?

Solution: The product of the digits of the three-digit numbers will be more than 2 and less than 7. Hence there are a total of 21 possibilities.

Question: Ram spend INR 10000 at 5% simple annual interest, and after two years, Sham invested INR 8000 at 10% simple annual interest. Explain after how many years Ram’s investment, will their balances become equal?

Solution:

Let after n years both the sums amount will become equal.

Then, 1000(1+5×(n+2)100)=800(1+10×n100)1000(1+5×(n+2)100)=800(1+10×n100)

1.5=15n100⇒n=101.5=15n100⇒n=10

Thus after 12 years after Ram’s invested their balances will be equal

Question: An alloy is prepared by combining three metals including A, B and C in the proportion 3: 4: 7 by volume. Weights of the same volume of the metals A, B and C will be in the ratio 5: 2: 6. What will be the weight in 130 kg of the alloy?

  • 70
  • 96
  • 48
  • 84

Solution:

Required weight of C=(7×63×5+4×2+7×6)×130=84C=(7×63×5+4×2+7×6)×130=84 kg

Question: If a, b and c all are positive integers such that ab = 432, bc = 96 and c < 9, then calculate the value of the smallest possible a + b + c is

  • 56
  • 59
  • 49
  • 46

Solution:

Given ab=432,bc=96ab=432,bc=96 and c<9c<9

In order to calculate the minimum value for a+b+c,a+b+c, the two larger numbers must be as close as possible. The closest combination whose product is 432 is 18×2418×24. For b=24,b=24, we get c=4c=4 and a=18a=18.

The least value for a+b+c=46a+b+c=46.

Question: A straight road connects points A and B. One car travels from A to B while another Car travels from B to A, both of them left the place at the same time. After meeting each other, both of them took 45 minutes and 20 minutes, respectively, to complete their journeys. If Car 1 travels at the speed of 60 km/hr, then what will be the speed of Car 2, in km/hr?

  • 90
  • 100
  • 80
  • 70

Solution: Here the Ratio of speeds =√ Inverse ratio of times taken = Inverse ratio of times taken C1:C2=√20:45C1:C2=20:45 i.e., 2: 3

Since the car speed C1C1 is 60 kmph, the speed of Car C2C2 will be 90 kmph
