In order to ensure equity and fairness to all examinees, the board authorities use CAT Percentile and Score Calculation method.
As the difficulty level of each question differs from another, a normalization process is employed to equalize the abilities of the students.
Each question holds 3 marks. While there is no negative marking, 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Different sets of question papers are set across the country, the normalization process is crucial.
CAT scores are always calculated in percentile. Higher the percentile, better the chances of the candidate to get admission in a prestigious university.
The percentile score is rounded to two decimal points. The third decimal number is rounded to the nearest close number.
Candidates with the same score are assigned the same rank. If 3 students for example get the third highest score, a candidate with the next highest score will be ranked 6th.
Note: CAT scores are valid for only 1 year, so students are advised to start applying to colleges with no further delay.
Read CAT Percentile and Score Calculation method
As the test is conducted in two sessions, the body of administration ensures that test scores go through a process of normalization. This is done to different forms and further on sections. The scaled scores are then converted to percentile. The result will show the scaled score of each section and the total percentile.
The percentile calculation is basically a value that tells the percentage of students who scored lesser than you.
The difficulty level of each score is analysed to a set metric by assessing each of the questions properly.
For each set of paper, an equalizing parameter is established based on factors such as highest score, lowest score, top 10 percentile scores, lowest 10 percentile scores, mean, median, and deviations such as city or educational background.
