This mentorship provides a strong foundation for curriculum development, faculty training, and best practices in management education. IIM Sirmaur is establishing itself as a premier institute known for its academic excellence and focus on experiential learning. However, as the Institute is at an early age and among the recently established IIMs, the strong alum network and Long-term Industrial Relations still need to be improved here compared to other well-established IIMs, which is one of the significant issues for the IIM Sirmaur. Still, with continuous growth and other developing practices, the institute is properly tackling the issue. It is believed to be ranked among the best Management Institutes in the country in the coming years.

The Permanent campus is spread over 300 acres and has modern classroom facilities. Once inaugurated, it will be the largest IIM area-wise.

Faculty Members: IIM Sirmaur has a team of over 35 full-time faculty, each with a wealth of expertise in management teaching and research. Many of these faculty members have also been part of older IIMs, bringing a wealth of management experience. In addition to the full-time faculty, the institute welcomes several visiting faculty members from top prestigious colleges like SP Jain and Mumbai. This diverse and experienced faculty team ensures that students receive the best education in accordance with the high standards set by IIMs, inspiring confidence in the academic quality of IIM Sirmaur.

Academic Curriculum: IIM Sirmaur follows the educational pedagogy, focusing on experiential learning through case studies, simulations, industry, and guest lectures by a leading business professional. This approach helps students apply theoretical knowledge to the real world; the case studies taught to students are from Harvard Business School, which allows the students to experience real-time problems faced by industry leaders at the top organizations around the world. The case discussion helps the students to develop thought processes to provide the best solutions in the business world.

However, IIM Sirmaur has taken care of these parameters in 2023-24, which might help them to achieve a better rank in the upcoming NIRF Ranking. IIM Sirmaur Ranked 38th in the Top MBA Colleges in India 2024, released by IIRF.

Composite Score Components Breakdown

Breakdown analysis of the components of the composite score is as follows:

  • Personal Interview: - The marks to the candidate will be awarded out of 20. The criteria of the performance is undisclosed and stays at the discretion of the interviewing body.
  • Scaled CAT Score: - IIM Sirmaur gives highest weightage to the DILR Score (40%), followed by VARC Score (40%) and the weightage to the Quantitative Aptitude Score is the lowest (20%). Hence, the students are advised to score well in both the DILR and VARC section. The Scaled CAT score is calculated by using their formula which normally is your CAT Score divided by the highest CAT Score with a multiplication factor designed by accommodating the above mentioned segregation.
  • 12th Score: -
Percentage in 12th class Score Awarded
If percentage < 45 Ineligible
If percentage < 75 0
If 75 < percentage < 85 1
If 85 < percentage < 95 2
If percentage > 95 4
  • 10th Score: -
Percentage in 10th class Score Awarded
If percentage < 45 Ineligible
If percentage < 75 0
If 75 < percentage < 85 1
If 85 < percentage < 95 2
If percentage > 95 3
  • Graduation Score: -
Percentage in Graduation Score Awarded
If percentage < 50 Ineligible
If percentage < 60 0
If 60 < percentage < 70 3
If 70 < percentage < 80 6
If 80 < percentage < 90 7
If percentage > 90 8

The above mentioned table is common for all the three processes. However, for the Tourism Management candidates, a multiplication factor is used for diversity which gets multiplied to the scores secured by the students based on their graduation percentage.

Multiplication Factor = 1 (If the graduation degree is in the Tourism Domain)

Multiplication Factor = 0.8 (If the graduation degree is in any domain other than Tourism)

For Example: - If a student secured 85% in his graduation degree, then,

  1. If the degree is in Tourism, the score awarded would be - 7
  2. If the degree is in domain other than Tourism, the score awarded would be - 7*0.8 = 5.6

(All the scores will be normalized for different education boards or universities)

  • Work Experience: -
Marks awarded based on the number of months of full-time work experience
Number of months CAP Round Candidates SAP Round Candidates Tourism PI Candidates
< 12 Months 0 0 0
12 - 17 Months 4 10 10
>17 - 23 Months 8 15 15
>23 - 35 Months 10 20 20
>35 - 41 Months 6 15 15
>41 - 53 Months 3 10 10
> 53 Months 1 0 0

(The scores will be normalized and for CAP round candidates, if the tidal full-time work experience is > 48 Months, the score awarded will be 0)

  • Gender Diversity: - For both CAP round and Tourism Interviews
  • Female/Transgender - 5
  • Male - 0

  • The 2-Year MBA Programme is a full-time residential programme designed to foster the holistic development of the students. The programme is divided into 6 trimesters.
  • In the first year, there are three trimesters of around 3–months. After the 1st year, the students are required to complete a Summer Internship program of 8-weeks with a reputed organization. The SIP programme provides an opportunity to all the students to implement the learnings they gathered in the first-year. Each trimester of the first-year has around 8-9 mandatory subjects varying from core courses from HR, Finance, Marketing, Operations, Strategy and IT & Analytics. The idea is to expose the students to all the aspects and domains of management before sending them to their respective Summer Internship.
  • The second-year consists of just one main Strategy course which takes place in the 4th trimester. The students are required to complete a total of 15 electives excluding the mandatory Strategy Course in the second-year. Each elective constitutes 3-credits and the students are required to complete a total of 45 credits coming solely from the chosen electives. Students are required to complete at least one major in one particular domain. A student is considered to complete a major in a domain when the student successfully completes and passes the examinations in a total of 6-8 electives in that particular domain. In the second year, all the Tourism students are mandatorily required to keep the Tourism domain as their majors domain while for the rest of the courses, IIM Sirmaur Academic Council has established some norms and criterion where in the students are allowed to choose electives from the core MBA programme in addition to the existing unique pool of electives.Three of the most popular electives in Tourism domain are - Tourism Analytics, Business Agility in Tourism and Revenue Management.
  • The PhD programme has a separate eligibility criteria for different candidates. The candidates who have already completed their MBA from an IIM, the PhD programme will be of 3-years. For the rest of the candidates, the programme is of a total of 5-years. The programme is divided into 2 major parts. Part 1 is of two-years where the enrolled students are taught the basics of management along with the current MBA batch. After 2 years, the enrolled students continue their research while performing their academic and administrative commitments. The enrolled students can select their area of work as per their interests. The areas of specialization offered by IIM Sirmaur are the same as mentioned above while explaining the top electives in a particular domain.
  • The Executive MBA programmes are specially designed for industrial executives. The programme is of two-years duration and is a part-time management course consisting of a full time residential module and a part time online module.
  • IIM Sirmaur also offers certification courses in Analytics and Management and several Management Development Programmes to industry professionals. These MDP programmes are usually of around two to three days. Officials from companies such as HPCL participated in these programmes. The programmes are specially designed where theoretical concepts are taught in a gamified manner. Since these programmes are designed as per the requirements of the company, several case studies are also used by the faculties to draw parallels between the existing problems being faced by the professionals and how to tackle them.
  • Executive PhD programme is a special programme for industrial professionals who are interested in researching in a particular field. The institute will provide assistance with theoretical concepts in the candidate’s interested field and in their research. This is a four to six year programme where the students are taught for six months in their respective interested field. The candidate is required to then successfully pass the CQE (Comprehensive Qualifying Examination). Post the completion of these six months, the student will be assisted until they receive their Doctoral degree. The classes will be conducted in an online environment over the weekends for two terms in six months with candidates required to mandatorily visit the campus for one week each in the two terms for completing the offline module and faculty interactions.
    1. The RAT exam stands for Internal Research Aptitude Test conducted by IIM Sirmaur for the selection process is a special exam conducted on the day of the offline interview.
    2. The Statement of Purpose required to convince the Academic Body of IIM Sirmaur is an important aspect of the admission process. Key Insights on IIM Sirmaur 2023 placements

  • IIM Sirmaur has reduced its dependence on new recruiters from over 90 in 2022 to around 65 in 2023. As the college becomes more prominent and established, it is likely that this reliance on new recruiters will eventually reduce further and older companies will become loyal and legacy recruiters like in the case of more established IIMs. Aspirants and students can take advantage of a more predictable nature of placements as far as the recruiters’ list is concerned in the future.
  • It is also interesting to note the remarkable increase in the PPOs count at IIM Sirmaur. In 2022 just 2 students were offered PPOs while in 2023 it increased to 13. The number of PPOs has been over 40 this year for the batch of 2024. If this trend continues, one can see IIM Sirmaur having over 20% students receiving PPOs, however this is still not close to what older established B-Schools offer.
  • IIM Sirmaur saw a massive jump in the highest CTC for the batch of 2023. The CTC of 64.12 LPA was offered by Tolaram Group (International Placement). This year however in 2024 the highest CTC till now has been just 32.5 LPA by Amazon. This is a decline of around 100% from the previous year.
  • There isn't a fixed pattern at IIM Sirmaur in terms of the sectors picking up the most number of students. While in 2022 IT and ITES sector emerged as the most dominant one, it was replaced by BFSI in 2023 and it is most likely to be replaced again by Sales and Marketing for 2024. This does not allow us to tag IIM Sirmaur as a sector specialist for any of the sectors.
  • IIM Sirmaur has seen a rise in International roles in 2024 as compared to previous years. 3 companies have already offered international roles to the students in 2024.

How has IIM Sirmaur performed compared to other baby IIMs ?

IIM Sirmaur has not performed well in terms of placement as compared to other baby IIMs. The average number of companies visiting baby IIMs was around 115. IIM Sirmaur did well in this regard by having over 125 companies on the campus but it falls behind other baby IIMs by a big margin in the average and median CTC. The average of the average CTCs across all baby IIMs was 16.16, while that of IIM Sirmaur was just 14.45 LPA. Similarly the average of the median CTC across all baby IIMs was 15.44 LPA while that of IIM Sirmaur was just 13 LPA. This shows that even though the number of companies were more, the CTC offered by them remained relatively low. Despite these, IIM Sirmaur managed to be ahead of IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Visakhapatnam and IIM Amritsar in the highest CTC offered.

IIM Sirmaur has been consistent in placing maximum number of students in the Sales and Marketing domain irrespective of the sector. Despite having an 100% increase in the number of recruiters, Sales and Marketing is still the most preferred choice of the students for summer placements. There has been a shift in the most preferred sector however from EdTech in 2022 to BFSI in 2023 and 2024. The same pattern can be seen in the final placement of 2023 as well where BFSI emerged as the most dominant sector.

See what existing students have to say about IIM Sirmaur placements

“Both Summer Placements and Final Placements are provided by the Institute. Being a third-generation IIM, Jobs offered at IIM Sr are as lucrative as other IIMs, but the Institute is progressing fairly well in this area. Prominent recruiters are coming to campus for recruitment. Majority of Batch got placed in BFSI sector. the last year average placement is 15 Lakh and the highest international package is 60 lakh”

  • Jaydeep (Batch of 2025, MBA Core)

“The placement is Umeralla Placement for both the batches core and TM batches. The average placement of last year was 15 lakh for core and 12 lakh for the TM batch and there is including of both international and national placements. this year i saw many good companies come for a placement like ,ICICI, HDFC, Air India, Indigo, Deliote, KPMG and the last year highest package is 62 lakh (TOLARAM)”

  • Shubhajit (Batch of 2025, MBA - TM)

“Placements are the best amongst all 3rd gen IIMs, be it SIPs or Final Placements. Likes of Paytm and Amazon are on campus and the numbers are also very promising. The placecom here does not gets involved in any unfair and dirty games and i can vouch for that. Theyll never ask you to opt out forcefully just to make their numbers good”

  • Ashwin (Batch of 2025, MBA Core)

IIM Sirmaur Batch Profile

IIM Sirmaur’s batch strength for the current batch of 2023-2025 is 309 students including both the courses of MBA Core and TM. Out of this a staggering 85% students are freshers.

IIM Sirmaur Batch Profile

This is not just a chance but a strategic decision of IIM Sirmaur to prefer more freshers over work experience students. Even amongst the 15% students who had work experience, preference was given to those who had less than 24 months of work experience. As per the official summer placement report of IIM Sirmaur for the batch of 2025, the decision of having more freshers was a deliberate decision to counter the slowdown in the market keeping the ROI for freshers high.

This however will certainly impact the overall diversity of the batch and peer learning experience.

IIM Sirmaur has, however, maintained a good diversity in terms of educational background. With over 50% students coming from BCom and BBA backgrounds, IIM Sirmaur has broken the usual notion of MBA classrooms being heavily dominated by engineering students. The representation of technical and science related background students is decent enough at 35% with nearly 28% of the batch comprising female students.

Life At IIM Sirmaur

Ever wondered about what college life is really like at IIM Sirmaur? It's a whole adventure! From going to classes in the morning to hanging out with friends in the hostel at night, life at IIM Sirmaur is all about making memories, learning and having fun.

A particular day in the life of a student at IIM Sirmaur starts with getting ready and rushing to attend morning classes which usually starts at 9 in the morning. In the first year at IIM Sirmaur, students study a variety of subjects like finance, marketing, HR, strategy, operations and many more. On any given day, there are between 3-6 classes, each lasting 1.5 hours. After the hectic schedule of classes, students engage themselves in other activities.

At IIM Sirmaur, students engage themselves in clubs and committees. The institute, a student run, offers a chance to students to be involved in its functioning. Each club or committee has their respective role to be performed. After the classes, students engage themselves in this work. By being a part of clubs and committees, students get a chance to work with their batchmates and make a difference in the institute by either handling its operations or organizing events. There are many students who work in live projects to gain a practical exposure by working on real projects. They devote some time of the day to this. This helps them in connecting academic knowledge with real work.

In the evenings, students relax at the mess, cafeteria or ground. They have their meals too. The institute has a library and computer lab for those who want to study, read books or newspapers or work on their academic projects. The day ends at students returning to their respective hostels. After this, they spend their time with their friends, creating lasting memories together.

As IIM Sirmaur is operating from its temporary campus at Paonta Sahib, The Campus area is not widespread and has limited space for hostels within a short distance of the academic building. The Institute has six hostels: Yajur Hostel, Atharva Hostel, Kailash Hostel, Kartik Hostel, Vinayak Hostel, and Dental Hostel. Among these six hostels, two are within the boundaries of the campus, Yajur Hostel and Atharva Hostel; these are girls' hostels and some additional separate rooms for PWD students. The security and restrictions are comparatively higher than those of other hostels as these hostels are within campus boundaries. However, when it comes to the advantages of these hostels, there are plenty, like the short distances between them and the academic blocks; students can reach the classes within a minute when they reside in Yajur and Atharva Hostels. Almost all the cultural and Sports activities are organized on the campus grounds, which are very close to these hostels, so accessibility is a significant advantage of girls' hostels. The other four hostels, Kailash Hostel, Kartik Hostel, Vinayak Hostel, and Dental Hostels, are for male students. Three of these hostels are for second-year students, allotted at the time of registration for the second year. Kailash Hostel is for first-year students; this hostel is 6km away from the academic block and is far away from all. Double occupancy rooms are allocated to students, and various facilities like Bicycles, washing machines, gym, indoor games, refrigerators, ovens, and geysers are provided to students, which makes life easier for them. Security is up to mark in all the hostels; on average, 2-3 guards are available, and CCTV Cameras protect gates. Students can bring their Vehicles to the hostels, and parking facilities are available. Girls can enter the boys' hostel from morning to evening to encourage co-ed and diverse educational sessions. Bus facilities are available for students who reside in these hostels, and buses are arranged for students from morning to late at night to provide good connectivity between the academic block and the hostels. Each hostel has a dedicated Mess and Canteen for students. The hostels' Entry times are from 5:00 Am to 10:00 P.m., and breaking these rules results in fines. The nearest market is 3km away from the hostels. For transportation, Institute buses and E-rickshaws are available nearby, which can help the students get to the nearest market.

It depends on your profile. If you are a general category student with good academic records - more than 85 percent throughout 10th, 12th, and graduation, then old IIMs will be better.

If you aren’t getting the old IIMs, you can consider new IIMs like IIM Nagpur, Sambalpur, Vizag, Amritsar, Sirmaur, and Bodhgaya. Being part of any recently established institute is a different experience altogether. You will get to set the culture on campus which your juniors will inherit. These baby IIMs have decent placements. You will get placement opportunities through campus drive if you have a good academic record. Here are the average CTC statistics for these IIMs.

Institute  Average CTC
IIM Nagpur  INR 15.21 LPA
IIM Vizag INR 15.06 LPA
IIM Amritsar INR 14.63 LPA
IIM Sirmaur  INR 12.74 LPA
IIM Bodhgaya  INR 12.36 LPA
IIM Sambalpur  INR 12.64 LPA

If you are willing to work hard and want to take advantage of opportunities that come with newly established institutes, then you should join these new IIMs.

After scrutinizing the list of colleges you mentioned, I think the most viable option is IIM Bodh Gaya. It is the most suitable among the 3 because it has been growing at a spectacular rate. The 2 major reasons for its rapid growth are

  • Location: IIM Bodh Gaya enjoys a location advantage due to being situated at a Buddhist tourist spot. The historic pilgrimage site is well connected with an airport just 7 km away. Six connectivity brings in better and more faculty and also top companies for recruitment that don’t visit Sirmaur and Sambalpur due to poor connectivity.
  • Mentorship: This is another factor that sets IIM Bodh Gaya apart from other baby items. Once under the mentorship of the top IIM, IIM Calcutta, IIM Bodh Gaya still has a similar pedagogy and curriculum.

Both these factors differentiate Bodh Gaya from Sambalpur and Sirmaur extremely well.

My brother was a part of the batch that suffered from covid regulations. Although the first year was online, the second year was totally virtual. Other than online classes one major hardship his batch faced was the internship offer getting revoked. Narrating his experience, he told me that

  • the initial days were very enthusiastic and filled with thrill. Throughout the day, formal inductions were conducted and esteemed guests from the industry enlightened the students about the dos and don'ts of the College.
  • Other activities included students getting enrolled to various clubs and committees which required interviews.
  • The pedagogy comprises the case study, preparation, and guest lecture. You have to make presentations and also discuss the slides in front of your batchmates
  • Interacting with peers from various walks of life is itself an enriching experience. You can use this opportunity to grow.
  • The student-driven culture allows you to manage and organize various events. You get maximum exposure through managing the budget, learning the operation of event management, networking with the right set of guests, and having close interaction with them.
  • Owing to its vicinity to many cities you get to explore places like Dehradun, Maclodgangj, Dharamshala, and Chandigarh. You can also take road trips down to the Himalayan lane.

Overall the experience was a really good one and my brother made some amazing college memories.

Compare the summer and final placement reports of both batches for all the 3 years. Look up the student clubs and activities on both campuses. They are absolutely necessary for your 2 years there. Finally, look up the professors in both colleges, majorly for the subject, you will probably be specializing in. Good professors impart their experience along with education. Keep in mind that IIM Bodhgaya, however, lags behind in one vital factor i.e., the number of students. In all probability, the students in the upcoming batch (your would-be batch) in Sirmaur will be more than if you were in Bodhgaya. A healthy amount of interaction matters a lot, especially because it's a business school and you benefit from the range of ideas numbers can provide.

However, the final decision is up to you entirely. Assign weights to the above factors and decide accordingly. After taking the decision, do not second guess your choice after going into one of the colleges. Make the best of your time there. Chase excellence in every facet of your MBA while you are there. If you do this, the choice part will cease to matter in a few months.
