In terms of placement, Mining Engineering at NIT Raipur is the best in the country. The experienced professors having good knowledge about the subject. In terms of theoretical knowledge, it is the best. But, when it comes to practicals, the institution lags.

The curriculum is outdated; most of the subjects in the course do not have any usage in the practical world. With the fast-moving technology, there is much software in mining which are important but, you will not get an opportunity to learn it at NIT Raipur. You can compare the curriculum across various institutions and find out the difference. This will only make sense after you get placed and work with students from other institutions as well. You will realize that your knowledge is restricted because of the curriculum followed at NIT Raipur.

If your main focus is money, you can join NIT Raipur as this institution provides good placement, Coal India also recruits students from here.

My very good friend was a student placement convener of mining engineering in NIT Raipur, therefore I have a fair idea about how it works.

Although the intake is 77, which is far more compared to any other colleges, the job opportunities are not enough for all the admitted students. Big brands such as Adani, CIL, VEDANTA do come in for the campus recruitment but they are not sufficient for all and also their eligibility criteria and other requirements do not fit all.

  • CIL: This is a dream company for all interested in pursuing mining as a career. It is one of those rare companies that offer a handsome salary around 14-15 LPA which keeps on revising at regular intervals. One glitch here is that it has some internal reservations and also they prefer only the top rankers in every batch.
  • VEDANTA & ADANI: ADANI is a great company to kick start your career. The eligibility criteria here are also very strict and the salary package is something around average. Nothing too exceptional. VEDANTA is the best option available currently for the students at the institute.
  • Cement Industry & Sector: These are the present manufacturers but are non-consistent and recruit only 2-4 students each year with average pay.

Talk to the seniors in the college to find out more about the actual placement scenario at the institute.

NIT Raipur started with the Mining, Metallurgy, and Mechanical branches. These branches are highly regarded in the institute.

  • An acquaintance of mine who is an NIT Raipur alumnus advises against dropping out. Even after dropping out a year, some students sadly do not live up to the expectations they had set for themselves.
  • The best option in NIT Raipur is arguably mining. Some of the students of NIT Raipur prepared for the JEE to appear for a second time and they were able to score big.

I do agree with my friend that it will be better if you pursue your studies along with the preparation for JEE Main. This way you will have a sense of security and a contingency plan if things don’t turn out as planned.

The scope of Mining is very limited and can be accessed only if you are truly interested in Mining and are serious about pursuing a career in the same. I suggest you pursue higher education in Mining from an elite foreign university like Colorado School of Mines, Royal School of Mines, and University of New South Wales. This will nurture your technical skills to the best. Another suggestion in this regard is that you can also go for ISM. The enthusiasm for Mining at ISM is like nowhere else.

However, if you are after a good package rather than pursuing your enthusiasm, then IIT KGP is a better option. IIT KGP has an abundance of opportunities for the students academic environment is second to none. It offers extensive exposure and is thus most preferred by Engineering students of all branches.

As far as recruiters are concerned, a large number of them offer jobs to students at IIT KGP mainly because of the credibility of the Institute irrespective of the branch. Also, very few companies offer core jobs in Mining. Therefore, most mining students end up with non-core jobs.

Some Core Companies for Mining visiting IIT KGP are

  • Tata Steel
  • Coal India ltd
  • Vedanta Resources
  • Jindal Steel Ltd

The average CTC is around 8 LPA.

There is no clear winner in this comparison. If you are interested in Mining Engineering and want to learn fundamental and core technicalities, then NIT Surathkal will be better. As an institute, NITK is better than other engineering colleges in Karnataka. It offers better academics, exposure, facilities, and campus life. For Mining, NIT Surtahkal placements are great. Coal India visits NITK for recruiting students. The average CTC received by the students of this bench is INR 5-6 LPA.

But if you aren’t particularly interested in Mining Engineering, then you should choose CSE at PES University. In the current industry landscape, CSE offers better placements with cushy salary packages.

Joining a certain branch that you are not even interested in just for the IIT tag is not the most logical decision. One usually decides on a certain branch for 3 reasons; either to get a good package or to pursue your area of interest or to follow the majority. However, in the case of Mining Engineering, this is not the case at all. You won’t be available to avail either of these benefits because of its low demand. In fact you will end up with the following circumstances

  • You will have to work extremely hard in the first year in order to get a branch change
  • In case you are unable to get a branch change, you will start running after POR, join different clubs to work on your non Engineering abilities.
  • During placements you will be more inclined towards Non-Core placements because of your aversion to Mining.

Still, if you are adamant about getting into IIT, then join only if

  • You want to work in analytics, consult or analyst after 4 years instead of Engineering
  • If you want to pursue MBA from an IIM
  • If you want to switch your field after graduation.

The reason why I am suggesting you give up Engineering is that with Mining, you can literally pursue anything other than Engineering. So it’s better you make up your mind for the same or apply to other institutes.

The students can get better placement in NIT Raipur. One will get good opportunities and exposure in the mining branch too. Moreover, the experience at NIT is far better than BIT DURG.

  • The curriculum followed by BIT DURG and even NIT Raipur is outdated.
  • The institute is at least 10 years behind the current industry practice as compared to NIT Raipur.
  • At least 30 years behind if we compare it with the US or European schools.
  • The industry clientele had taken leaps and bounds in terms of technology and what the students study is old-era theories that have little relevance in practice now.
  • Many industries hire graduates through campus interviews, 1st train them for 3 to 6 months to prepare the students as per industry requirements and update the knowledge.

The table shows a brief overview of the institutions:

Particulars

NIT Raipur

BIT DURG

Median Salary

Rs. 9.5 lakhs

Rs. 6.5 lakhs

Highest Salary

Rs. 33 lakhs

Rs. 32 lakhs

Entrance Criteria

JEE Mains

CPET

Fees

Rs. 5.52 lakhs

Rs. 2.92 lakhs

So overall, if the students are into mechanical or mining, don't rely too much on what the book taught you, be aware of current trends and practices.

Mining at NIT Raipur is certainly an interesting choice. The Mining branch is one of the oldest branches at the institute. It is almost 70 years old. I have a few friends at NIT Raipur and here is what they had to say about the Mining branch.

  • Faculty:The faculty base is great for the branch. They are experts in the field with years of experience. Try to get along with your professors. That way you can work with them on their projects. This will give you exposure to the field and you will also be able to make industry contacts.
  • Infrastructure: The infrastructure of the department is also quite good. There are laboratories for Rock Mechanics and Mining Machinery. The labs are also equipped with premium mining software.
  • Placements: Placement for Mining at NIT Raipur is also quite impressive. All the mining and cement companies visit the campus for placements.

Overall, NIT Raipur is certainly a good option for Mining Engineering. You will also have the opportunity to get a 3 day-long training at Kolkata at the cost of 40,000-50,000.
