Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College has the reputation of being one of the top medical institutions of the country despite being the youngest of the three major municipal hospitals teaching medical courses. It derives its name from one of the most eminent freedom fighters, Lokmanya Tilak. The institution aims to achieve excellence through service and holds the credit for being the first major referral hospital. The Medical College was established fifty years ago in 1964 with a batch of 60 students and has grown to become one of the best super speciality training centres and produce quality health care professionals. The hospital employs 550 postgraduate students and 300 senior staff members for taking care of a huge number of patients every year. It holds the credit for being the country’s first hospital to provide trauma services and specializes in disaster management services.

It was the first Trauma Service in our country and possibly in Asia, which has been on a constant ‘state of alert’ for disasters.
