Every college is good in one or the other aspects. Its location, faculty, and infrastructure are the main factors that determine a college's priority. The following list contains the colleges in order of priority based on their pros and cons.

Pros:

  • BHU: No requirement to sign a bond

  • Seth GS: Located in Mumbai with the best academic structure

  • KGMU Lucknow: The location and academic structure are perfect.

  • Other AIIMS: No need to sign any bond and the fee structure is affordable. AIIMS tag can help you with USMLE purposes.

Cons:

  • BHU: Located in Varanasi, it lacks the facilities of metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai

  • Seth GS: Mumbai is expensive and a bond of 1 year needs to be signed

  • CMC Vellore: You will have to learn Tamil as it is located South India. The fee structure is pretty expensive.

  • Other AIIMS: They are usually not located in a good location except for Bhopal and Bhubaneswar.

The preferred order as per the pros and cons can be - BHU> AIIMS> KGMU> Grant> Seth GS> CMC Vellore

One college can be good for you but bad for others. This is because your own needs determine which college is best for you. So choose wisely.

I have a lot of friends who are doctors today and have completed their M.B.B.S. from either CMC Vellore or AIIMS. I can easily answer your question.

  • Most graduates after completing their M.B.B.S. from AIIMS prefer either settling abroad or aiming for higher education while CMC graduates mostly continue their higher education at CMC itself.
  • CMC students are required to do bonds in missionary hospitals and their higher education is their second priority. They provide social services in the form of healthcare facilities in remote areas of the country and contribute largely to society. AIIMS students' priority is usually a high-paying job or an excellent university for higher education.
  • AIIMS graduates are more skilled in research and thus tend to publish more than CMC students.
  • CMC students have more real-time experience than AIIMS students and possess great clinical and surgical skills. They can transform their theoretical knowledge into practical approaches way earlier than AIIMS students.
  • CMC gives more preference to Christians and thus non Christians find it difficult to undergo training from MBBS to super-specialty at CMC.

Here is a video that gives an overview of CMC Vellore

These are some major points of comparison I have observed between my graduate friends from the 2 institutes.

To pursue a Neurosurgery course, both colleges are equally good in their own ways. But AIIMS Delhi should definitely be your first choice.

Here’s why:

  • They have a well adapted and constructive system.
  • They have a huge patient load.
  • You will have proper support from the latest technology, excellent guides, renowned consultants and well equipped labs and machinery.
  • They follow dedicated patient management protocol, incorporating latest techniques into their surgical practice.
  • They have got a cadaveric training facility with cadaveric courses being conducted from time to time.
  • They also have animal training labs where you can work on your microsurgical skills.

Delhi is a very lively city offering various opportunities through numerous national and international conferences conducted here frequently.

CMC Vellore also has a great reputation but AIIMS has an upper hand. The schedule at both places, your residency training is going to be tough. The fees at CMC are much higher than AIIMS and the salary offered at AIIMS is 4 times higher than CMC.

There are two way to get admission into CMC Vellore, these include:

  • Fill the forms for NEET and CMC Vellore.
  • Clear the cut off for NEET (UG)

Clearing NEET qualifies you for the entrance exam of CMC Vellore. After that, take the CMC Vellore entrance exam. The entrance for CMC is conducted in two stages.

You get admission into CMC only after clearing all the stages of the entrance exams. Keep in mind they have a 50% reservation category for Christian students. There are 10% seats for students of the unreserved category. So, if you belong to the unreserved category, the competition during admission will be noticeably tougher than usual.

According to the reviews online by the students of these colleges, here’s what the ranking seems to be like:

  • KGMU has mostly been ranked among the top 5 institutions in India. It usually maintained its place in rank 2 or 3. This institution is 125 years old with proper educational experience.
  • AFMC is a very disciplined institution with strict rules and codes of conduct, as it has direct affiliation with Armed forces. Though being well reputed, in academics and exposure it might lag behind.
  • MAMC, Grants Medical College (GMC) and IMS BHU are at a similar level.
  • Some students claim MAMC to be slightly better than AFMC.
  • GMC is very popular in and around Maharashtra.
  • IMS-BHU is autonomous; it has the reputation of BHU tagged along which is beneficial.
  • CMC is amongst the oldest medical colleges, but their severe lack of proper facilities in this college and political disturbances have tarnished its reputation.

Therefore it is suggested you either go for KGMU or MAMC, as they will provide you with the required exposure and opportunities.
