Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR) is a government institute in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in the year 1983 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to carry out basic strategic and applied research on major pulse crops. The Institute is involved in generation of basic information, development of high yielding varieties and appropriate production and protection technologies, demonstration and transfer of technologies, production of breeder seeds and strategic coordination of pulses research through wide network of testing centers across the country.
It is situated on Grand Trunk Road and is about 12 KM from Kanpur Central Railway Station towards New Delhi.
Collaboration:
- ACIAR, Australia
- AVRDC, Taiwan
- ICARDA, Syria
- ICRISAT, India
Research:
- DNA fingerprinting of major pulse crops of India
- Molecular Markers in Crop Improvement
- National Initiative on climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA)
- Functional genomics in chickpea
- Development and validation of PCR based diagnostic for major viral diseases of some important pulses crops
- Increasing chickpea and pigeonpea production through intensive application of Integrated Pest Management
Library- IIPR Library is one of the important libraries in the country having large number of publications including 4069 books / monographs, 4919 bound volumes of Indian and international journals, 45 bulletins, 25 pamphlets, and other reference materials. The Library has added of 41 issues Indian and 13 foreign Journals, 80 books (72 titles), 290 newsletters, 52 gratis books, 101 annual reports and 67 gratis journals and other publication for the year 2012 totaling 644 publications to its collection.
Labs- The Institute laboratories is to cater to the needs of different research mandates.
Biotechnology Lab is equipped with Tissue Culture Facility, Insect Bioassay Facility, Plant Hardening and Establishment Unit. Biotechnology Unit has around 1000 square feet inoculation room cum tissue culture facility. It has 6 horizontal laminars flow enabling to work for 12 peoples at a time. Culture rooms have total 30 culture trolleys to accommodate in vitro materials from pigeonpea, chickpea and Vigna crops.
The Pulse Processing Lab with a Mini Dal Mill for large scale testing for chickpea and the overall capacity of the mill ranged between 109-122 kg/h and over all dal recovery of 76% was obtained. Different emery grades (16, 20, 24, 30 & 36) have also been evaluated for dehusking of pigeonpea with 74% dal recovery at 30 number emery grades for untreated grains.
Crop Production Division (CPD) lab is equipped with automatic machines viz., Automatic weather station, spectrophotometer, flame photometer, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), TOC Analyser, N Analyser, Soil moisture meter, Infiltrometers, lux meter, Pressure plate apparatus and pshycrometer, Penetrologger, Pressure chamber and water quality kit.
Crop Physiology and biochemistry and Microbiology (CPBM) Labs is equipped with an advanced powerful stress monitoring system called Chlorophyll fluorescene imaging systemenabling to monitor photosynthesis in plants under different abiotic stresses. Based on imaging patterns, the precise diagnosis of plant activities under stress can be made. The image patterns keep changing with the level of stress.
Research Farm- IIPR has over the possession of two (Main farm and New Research Farm) with 84 ha total area with 100% irrigation facility.
Auditorium- The Institute has an auditorium for cultural programs and conferences with seating capacity of 300 persons.
