Course Description

Calcutta University MA admissions 2023 are going to begin soon. Admission to the program at Calcutta University will be based on the entrance exam followed by the Viva Voce conducted by the university. The Calcutta University offers full time Master of Arts (MA) programs in the department of Art, Education, Journalism & Mass Communication, Home Science and Science. The Duration of the Course is 2 Years or 4 Semesters.

The MA program at Calcutta University is offered in 28 Specializations, namely, Ancient Indian History & Culture, Arabic & Persian, Archaeology, Bengali Language and Literature, Buddhist Studies, Comparative Indian Language and Literature, Economics, English Language and Literature, Museology, Psychology, Geography, Human Development etc.

Basic EligibilityCriteria for Admission in full-time MA Course is to complete a Graduation Degree in the relevant stream from a recognized University.

The selection of candidates is usually merit-based but it varies for some of the provided subjects. Internship is an integral part of a curriculum for Calcutta University, hence the students who is doing MA in Museology must complete a 3 months internship in the 4th Semester either in museums, heritage institutes, conservation laboratories etc.

Calcutta University MA Eligibility Criteria

The Eligibility Criteria is different for different specializations of MA Course. The Criteria is mentioned below:

The candidate who wishes to apply for the MA program must have passed Graduation examination in the relevant stream from a recognized University.
For MA in Home Science Department, the eligible candidates shall have done B.Sc.(H) in Human Development/Sociology/Psychology/ Education/Home Science.
For MA in Museology, the eligible candidates shall have Bachelor’s Degree with Honours or Master’s Degree in relevant subjects and are eligible for admission.
For MA in Arts Department, the eligible candidates shall have done B.Sc. or BA(H) in any of the relevant subjects – History, Geography, Anthropology, Sanskrit, Geology, Bengali, Humanities, Botany, Pali, Philosophy, Linguistics, Political Science, Sociology, Ancient Indian History and etc.
For MA in English Language & Literature, History, Islamic History & Culture, Buddhist Studies, Journalism & Mass Communication, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Ancient Indian History & Culture, Sociology, Geography, Psychology, Economics, the candidates must have Bachelor’s Degree in relevant subject.
For MA in Science Department, the eligible candidates shall have done B.Sc. or BA(H) in Geography or Psychology or in accordance with merit BA / B.Sc. Examination.
For MA in Russian Language, the eligible candidate shall have BA (Hons.) in Russian or Pre-MA in Russian
For MA in French, the eligible candidate shall have BA (Hons.) or 45% marks in Pre-MA.
For MA in Education, the eligible candidate shall have 40% in the qualifying degree.

Calcutta University MA Admission

Selection Criteria:

Selection Criteria for MA is strictly Merit Based. Out of the total seats available in each Course, the candidates who have completed their graduation from Calcutta University will be offered 60% of the seats but the selection list will be made based on their merits.While 40% of the seats will be offered to the candidates from Calcutta (preceding year) or other Universities basis of MCQ Admission Test.

Candidates who seek admission in the MA program of Calcutta University have to fill the online application form.
The application form is available on the Official Website of the Calcutta University.
Candidates shall fill the form thoroughly and provide the correct information and then click submit.
Candidates must pay the application fee of INR 100 for General Category and INR 50 for Reserved Category through Debit Card or Credit Card.

Syllabus for MA Program and other details about the Course is mentioned below:

The entire MA course has 2 Academic Years comprising 4 semesters. The four semesters have all theory courses in all the subjects offered by Calcutta University in MA program.
The division of marks – Internal or Exam based in each subject differs basis the courses offered in each semester.
In MA Archaeology, the final course of 50 marks is based on Field Training and Dissertation.
In MA Museology, the first two semesters have Theory courses, while 3rd Semester has practical courses while the fourth course is based on the 3 months Compulsory Internship in any museums, heritage institutes, conservation laboratories etc.

Between Calcutta University and Presidency University for a PG, you should opt for Presidency University. Having studied in Calcutta University, I suggest you go for Presidency instead. Calcutta University is known to provide low marks to students. The teachers are part of the board or question setter which doesn't give good marks and a student has to study under them. Apart from this, there are certain colleges that, to improve their grades, give good marks to the students. Both of these cases are not good. Along with this, the marks get worse as the answer sheets are not checked by the college faculty and are instead checked by someone else. The Presidency won over these things. A student scores good marks in Presidency. The teachers are not that strict and they only check the answers sheets. As it's only the college teachers who do the questions and answers work in the exam, once getting familiar with them will help a student score well. Therefore, it's better to opt for Presidency University. Due to its better faculty, facilities and overall experience.

One of my friends was a student of the IEM thus, he had his reasons to make a choice among all the given options which might help you choose a college for yourself. Instead of enrolling for any college under WBJEE, you can try to go for IITs. If you have no luck there, then you should opt for government colleges such as CU, JU, and KGEC. Talking about IEM, you should know IEM provides a good opportunity for the students with all the favorable benefits. Apart from this, Heritage Institute of Technology is not a good choice as the crowd of students doesn’t have any standards. Most of them are enrolled by the management quota. You may also go to other colleges like Techno Main Saltlake otherwise, you can also choose GCETT Serampore, near Kolkata, as it is also a good college.

CU students claim that it is very difficult to score good marks here, but since the semester system started in CU, it has become manageable. So choose the college you feel suits all your requirements, then go for the one. The one thing better in CU is the environment, because RBU has been in constant disputes and political turmoil, which sometimes hampers regular classwork.

University of Calcutta and Kalyani Government Engineering College are both terrific colleges. There are certain precise points that draw out the best in these institutes. Faculty: Both the institutes have well-established faculty units. Kalyani Government Engineering College has around 9 faculty members in electrical engineering whereas the University of Calcutta has more than 12 faculty members in the chemical engineering department. Academics: The academics at KGEC is decent and the labs are well equipped too. The electrical department is one of the most relaxed branches and does not burden students with assignments. The students are provided with higher marks in practical papers in comparison to other branches. The major GATE rankers at KGEC are from the electrical engineering department. I have friends who completed their B.Com from Calcutta University and Burdwan University and according to them, it's difficult to get a BCom degree from any of these two universities. Because it is honors, and you must also manage a large syllabus. As far as the curriculum is concerned, Calcutta University and Burdwan University are identical. Even Burdwan University asks the same questions again and over. You will have to put in extra effort to do well in academics at both Burdwan University and Calcutta University. However, Calcutta University has a locational advantage. You will have better access to coaching. Calcutta University is also more recognized. I will suggest that you take all these factors into consideration, and choose an institute according to your convenience.
