How to apply for Calcutta University B.A?

Download the application form from the official website on https://www.caluniv.ac.in/.
Click on B.A Application form.
Download and fill in all the necessary details, this includes both personal and academic details.
Finally, send the filled in application form along with the necessary documents.

Documents to be sent along with the application form are:

Bank Challan or online payment receipt
Original School leaving Certificate from the Principal / Head of the School / last attended.
Fitness Medical certificate
Self-attested copies of 10th and 12th mark sheets.
Self-attested copy of the Birth certificate
Caste certificate (if applicable).
Domicile Certificate.
Two copies of passport size color photographs
Self-attested photocopy of aadhar card

Calcutta University B.A Course Details

The B.A course at Calcutta University consists of 6 semesters (3 years)
In B.A. Honors program a student shall have to study 14 Core courses of the Honours Subject as specified for each of the 6 semesters.
In B.A. general program a student shall have to study 4 Core Courses of which 2 subjects can be chosen
The dissertation project is a course to attain knowledge about a real-life situation. Such a project will carry 6 credits.
The B.A program will consist of the Skill Enhancement Program and the Ability Enhancement Compulsory Program. The Skill Enhancement Program is designed to increase the students’ competencies and value-based knowledge. The Ability Enhancement Compulsory Program is compulsory and leads to knowledge enhancement.
For the B. A course the total theory course is 26 and the total credit is 96. The total practical course is 22 and the credit score is 44.
Each semester will consist of at least 15-18 weeks of academic work.

The total duration of the B.A course is 3 years which is divided into 6 semesters. The maximum time to complete the course is 5 years. If the candidate is not able to clear the exams in 5 years, then the enrollment will be canceled.

Course Evaluation

The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) follows a 10 point grading system. The grades will be awarded as follows:

Semester Grade Point Average- This is the weighted average of the numerical value of all the papers in one given semester.

Cumulative Grade Point Average- This is the weighted average of all the 6 Semester Grade Point Average.

Attendance Requirement

A student should have a minimum of 75% of attendance to be eligible for the exams. If a student has at least 60% attendance, they are eligible for the exams provided they pay the prescribed fee. A student who has below 60% attendance will not be allowed to take the examinations and will have to pursue the same admission in the next year.

Examination Regulation

The semester-end examinations for semester 1, semester 3, and semester 5 are held in December - January. The semester-end examination for semester 2, semester 4, and semester 6 will be held in June- July.
The semester-end examination will amount to 80% of the total marks. The internal assessment marks will be for 20% of the marks.
Marks will also be awarded to students based on their class attendance. For attending 60% or above classes, but less than 75% classes 6 marks will be awarded. Those who attend more than 75% but less than 90% of classes will be given 8 marks. Those students who attend 90% or more classes will be given 10 marks.

Between Calcutta University and Presidency University for a PG, you should opt for Presidency University. Having studied in Calcutta University, I suggest you go for Presidency instead. Calcutta University is known to provide low marks to students. The teachers are part of the board or question setter which doesn't give good marks and a student has to study under them. Apart from this, there are certain colleges that, to improve their grades, give good marks to the students. Both of these cases are not good. Along with this, the marks get worse as the answer sheets are not checked by the college faculty and are instead checked by someone else. The Presidency won over these things. A student scores good marks in Presidency. The teachers are not that strict and they only check the answers sheets. As it's only the college teachers who do the questions and answers work in the exam, once getting familiar with them will help a student score well. Therefore, it's better to opt for Presidency University. Due to its better faculty, facilities and overall experience.

One of my friends was a student of the IEM thus, he had his reasons to make a choice among all the given options which might help you choose a college for yourself. Instead of enrolling for any college under WBJEE, you can try to go for IITs. If you have no luck there, then you should opt for government colleges such as CU, JU, and KGEC. Talking about IEM, you should know IEM provides a good opportunity for the students with all the favorable benefits. Apart from this, Heritage Institute of Technology is not a good choice as the crowd of students doesn’t have any standards. Most of them are enrolled by the management quota. You may also go to other colleges like Techno Main Saltlake otherwise, you can also choose GCETT Serampore, near Kolkata, as it is also a good college.

Students generally choose Calcutta University over other institutions because there are few good colleges affiliated with universities. I have friends who completed their B.Com from Calcutta University and Burdwan University and according to them, it's difficult to get a BCom degree from any of these two universities. Because it is honors, and you must also manage a large syllabus. As far as the curriculum is concerned, Calcutta University and Burdwan University are identical. Even Burdwan University asks the same questions again and over. You will have to put in extra effort to do well in academics at both Burdwan University and Calcutta University. However, Calcutta University has a locational advantage. You will have better access to coaching. Calcutta University is also more recognized. I will suggest that you take all these factors into consideration, and choose an institute according to your convenience.
