The Supreme Court of India (SC) has asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to consider scrapping the remaining Class 10th and Class 12th Board exams and to allot the marks on the basis of internal assessment.

The 3-judge bench chaired by Justice A M Khanwilkar has asked CBSE to take instructions and inform the court about the decision by Tuesday i.e. June 23, 2020.

A petition was presented to the court by a parent Amit Bhatia seeking CBSE to cancel the pending class 10th and 12th exams in light of the coronavirus crisis in the country.

The parent was asking the court to urge and direct the Board to mark students on the basis of internal assessment in view of coronavirus pandemic.

A group of parents also pleaded to the court to intervene and stay the decision alleging that the students will be exposed to the infection if they appear for the examination which is to be conducted at 15,000 exam centres.

Furthermore, some parents have also launched an online campaign hashtagged - #Studentlivesmatter, #Livesoverexams, and #Cancelboardexams.

According to the revised date sheet, CBSE will be conducting the examination for Class X and Class XII from July 1.

Parents have mentioned that the CBSE has cancelled the CBSE 10th and CBSE 12th exams 2020 for around 250 of its schools that are situated abroad and has asked to award marks to students on the basis of either practical exams conducted or the internal assessment marks, then why similar approach cannot be followed for students in India.

This is the first time when CBSE will be announcing the Class X and Class XII results in the month of August.

As per the Union Home Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the board is expected to declare the Class X and Class XII 2020 results which include the results of previous exams and the results of examinations in July by August 15.
