GITAM University Researcher Awarded INR 48 Lakh

New Delhi: A researcher from GITAM University (Deemed to be University) has been awarded INR 48.61 lakh by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India, according to a statement from the university.

Gitam University researcher Mr. Subhash Chandra has been awarded for performing a research on upcycling of brackish water.

According to the official release, Bose received the money as part of the Water Technology Initiative initiative, which was unveiled in March 2023.

As per a press statement of GITAM University, the initiative intends to produce sustainable carbon electrodes from biomass waste to use in membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) technology, it has emerged as a viable and effective water treatment technique for desalinating saltwater.

According to the research, this method is quite effective and does not cause any secondary pollution.

The project's leader, Subhash Chandra, stated: "This project will help us find a sustainable and affordable solution to the problem of water scarcity in India's desert regions. To generate carbon electrodes and to build and construct the MCDI cell for desalination, we will use functionalized biochar. Additionally, this project emphasizes the significance of sustainable practices and innovations in addressing pressing problems like water scarcity and climate change. Creating carbon electrodes using biomass waste for brackish water desalination is a crucial step towards accomplishing a sustainable carbon-neutral future”.
