The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has undertaken an exercise to review its syllabus and textbooks with a view to reduce the burden of curriculum on the students from the next academic session.

The NCERT has decided to review the syllabus to ensure that students make a “speedy recovery” in learning, which has been hit by Covid-19 pandemic circumstances.

Writing to the head of the concerned departments of the organisation, Sridhar Srivastava, Director in-charge, NCERT informed to conduct a review involving the internal and external experts and propose the respective changes within December 28, 2021.

A case for the review was made by Srivastava quoting the pandemic during which, he said, students of all the grades have faced a lot of struggles while learning through online and offline classes.

Further, he referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee's observations and the National Education Policy 2020 in this regard.

Srivastava said that the National curriculum framework is still in the process of being made and it may take some time for the newly developed textbooks to get published. So, in order to provide the students an opportunity for speedy recovery, NCERT must take actions towards rationalisation of its syllabus and textbooks for the next academic year.

However, justification of textbooks for the primary stage has been done, but considering the flow of higher stages, the exercise must be done for all the subjects of all the classes from VI to XII, Srivastava wrote.

According to the NEP 2020, in this aspect, the trimming of content and the increased flexibility of school curriculum along with renewed importance on constructive rather than memorization must go with the parallel changes in school textbooks.

Until now, the NCERT has performed two review exercises since 2014. Some additions and modifications in textbooks were done in 2017, while in 2019, contents were removed majorly from the history textbooks.

Earlier, in a written response in the Lok Sabha in 2019, the Ministry of Education had asserted that in order to understand the areas in life skill education, value education, physical education and experiential learning, it was important to remove the contents. This is because students were unable to pay heed to these areas due to the comprehensive curriculum.

Therefore, to achieve this, it was suggested for the NCERT to undertake an exercise to analyse its syllabus to trim the burden of curriculum on the students.

Further, the NCERT reviewed its textbooks in 2018-19, and rationalised the contents of its textbooks across the subjects. The revised textbooks are now available for the year 2019-20, the ministry added.
