Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) not to conduct board examination till May due to Covid-19 outbreak. DoE further requested to reduce the syllabus.

In a letter to CBSE, DoE informed that due to Covid-19 outbreak, the schools in Delhi closed till October 31, which constituted most time of the academic year 2020-21. As a result physical classes for CBSE class 10 and CBSE class 12 could not be conducted.

However, online classes and semi-online activities such as worksheet activities and group tasks were going on but it cannot replace the significance of the physical class learning process, He added.

He further added, “If we want to give students enough time to study in person in the school, we need to give them more time and extend this academic session beyond March and board exams should not be conducted before May 2021."

The next academic session will start from June 2021 subsequently. He also requested to reduce the syllabus further so that faculties may be able to finish the syllabus on time.

The CBSE board has already reduced 30% of the total syllabus in the wake of Schools reopening in July amid Covid-19 but schools in Delhi are closed till October 31, 2020.

The board has also assured the CBSE class 10 and class 12 students about providing sample questions of the final board exams based on the reduced syllabus so that students could easily prepare according to revised syllabus.

Since practical exams test certain skills and potential of students. So, in order to give students a hands-on practice of practical exams and internal assessment, the board should provide a detailed guideline and other alternatives to replace practical exams.

It should be noted that schools and colleges have been closed since March 25, 2020 in the wake of Covid-19 outbreak. To stop the spread of coronavirus, the Central government has imposed nationwide lockdown.

However, as per the ‘Unlock 5’ guidelines, schools and colleges are allowed to open from October 15, 2020 but the final decision about reopening of schools is reserved to the state government.

Delhi Government has decided to remain the schools and colleges closed till October 31, 2020 considering the number of cases in the state.
