CBSE 2020 Marking Scheme Explained

As the CBSE Board are to be announced by July 15 shall declare the results to the students on the basis of their performance in the papers they have tried. During the lockdown, the evaluation process for these exams began, as teachers were given answer scripts at their home to evaluate.

The decision to cancel pending CBSE board exams 2020 gave the parents and students a sigh of relief but also confused them as to how their results will be announced. SC asked the Board to clarify the assessment scheme on 26 June 2020.

The top court approved the assessment scheme as presented by the centre for preparing the Class 10th and Class 12th results in 2020. Students who have appeared for all the papers will be declared their results on the basis of the performance of the examination.

Now, for students of Classes 10 and 12 who have taken part in board examinations for more than 3 subjects, CBSE will assign marks for the subject under consideration on the basis of average marks obtained in the best three subjects.

Whereas, those who have appeared only for three subjects, the average mark shall be decided on the basis of the three attempted subjects which are ill further used for the determination of the marks of the pending examinations which have been cancelled.

Lastly, Class 12th students who could only appear for 1 or 2 paper (especially North East Delhi students), their results will be basis the performance in the appeared subjects as well as the performance in the internal/practical/project assignment

The board has clarified that for CBSE Class 10th Exams 2020, subjects for which the exam has been cancelled, the board will not be grading students on those papers.

In addition, in the case of Class 12, students who have already appeared for the papers they have chosen will not be given the opportunity to appear for the examination at a later date and their results will be binding.

CBSE 12th result will be declared by 15 July 2020 for all students regardless of the number of subjects for which the student has appeared.

To check the result, students will need to log in with details such as centre number, roll number, card ID, etc. The Board has not confirmed whether the students will be allowed to re-check or to appear for the compartment exam.

It should be noted that only those students who have either appeared for three or more papers or have 1 or 2 subjects pending will be given the opportunity to appear for the Class 12 exam at a later date.

The date for the declaration of Class 10 Results 2020 has not yet been announced by CBSE. However, it is expected that the 10th CBSE results, together with Class 12, will be released by 15 July. The exact date for the CBSE Class 10 result 2020 has yet to be announced by the Board.

On Thursday, the Board gave its final decision to the Supreme Court (SC) that the 10th CBSE exam had been cancelled, while the 12th class students would be given the opportunity to appear for the exams later or could obtain their results under the assessment scheme based on the previous three exams.

The Class 12 exams scheduled to take place from 1 to 15 July 2020 are therefore cancelled.

In addition, the ICSE Board has also decided to cancel the pending examinations, but the evaluation criteria, as per the CISCE Board, will be slightly different from the CBSE. The evaluation criteria of the ICSE Board would be released in a matter of weeks.

CBSE Alternate Marking Scheme 2020: New Doubts Arise

Shortly after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued an "alternative assessment scheme" students expressed their dissatisfaction with the scheme. Meanwhile, CBSE has also stated that compartmental exams for 2020 will be held online

Under the CBSE marking scheme, students of Class 10 and Class 12 who have taken part in all the exams will receive the results on the basis of their performance in the exams. However, as a result of the Delhi riots and the coronavirus outbreak, several students were unable to complete the exam for all subjects.

In this case, students who have completed more than three exams will obtain results on the basis of their performance in the average of the three best subjects.

Students who have completed only three exams will calculate the average score obtained in two best-performing subjects for non-performing exams. For those who could not appear in more than two areas, an assessment will be made on the basis of the internal marks and the marks obtained in the examinations.

Several students objected to the alternative CBSE assessment scheme, as high score subjects such as Hindi and Computer Science will be assessed on the basis of tough subjects. In fact, the news was rife if such schemes would affect admissions to colleges later on.

In response to such allegations, the nation’s prestigious Delhi University reverted saying CBSE’s present marking schemes will not impact admissions

Expressing their discontent, a student wrote on social media: “I am from Class12 science stream my Hindi paper is postponed and I accept it but sir I am not satisfied with marking scheme based on best three examinations sir Hindi is quite easier than physics chemistry maths so please marked on the basis of internals,”

Another student said: “For PCM with Computer Science students, marks for CS will be awarded on the basis of the best of three from Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English. Given that computer science is a scoring subject that can increase the percentage overall, this decision will reduce the same for many,”

Students have been given an option to improve their marks later when the exams are held in conducive conditions. Class 10 students will not be given the same opportunity. Other students are worried about getting lesser marks compared to students who appeared in all examinations.

A student from North-East wrote, “Sir but what about the marking scheme of CBSE Class12th. The northeast student has not yet given the physics, chemistry, biology exams if they are assessed on the basis of internal then it would be unfair towards us who have completed three exams..further, our physics paper was tough,”

On the other hand, few have accepted the alternative assessment scheme due to the prevailing conditions in the country.
