Course Description

IIIT Guwahati PhD admission 2022 for the August cycle is open now. Th last date to submit the application form has been extended to September 25. Eligible candidates can apply online on the official website of the institute. IIIT Guwahati offers a full-time Ph.D. in computer science engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mathematics and humanities, and social science. The maximum duration of the Ph.D. program is 6 years from the date of admission for a full-time student and 8 years for a part-time student. The minimum requirement is a B.E/ B.Tech. for Engineering disciplines and a Master’s degree for other disciplines. Students can be admitted throughout the year. IIIT Guwahati Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria

For getting admission to various disciplines of Ph.D. program at IIIT Guwahati, a candidate must have to pass the following eligibility criteria:

For computer science and electronics and communication engineering students should have done a master's degree in engineering in a relevant area with 60% of marks or 6.5 CPI.
Else, he/ she should possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology or medical science or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7 or 65% percentage.
For a mathematics student, one must have done MA or MSc or MTech in mathematics with at least 60% marks or 6.5 CPI.
For humanities and social science, the candidate must be a master in linguistics with 60% marks for 6 CPI.

Hear the candidate having my M.Phil degree for NET-JRF will be given preference.

For admission to this institute, the interested candidates have to first apply for the application form available at the official website of the institute.
The interested candidates have to fill that form and submit all the required and mandatory details with proper documentation.

IIIT Guwahati Ph.D. Courses Details

IIIT Guwahati offers Ph.D. in four disciplines namely computer science engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mathematics and humanities, and social sciences.

There is a wide range of areas of search available for Ph.D. students. For example, cloud computing machine learning, and AI in service computing, etc. are available for computer science engineering Ph.D. students.
While electronics and communication engineering students have facilities of research in the field of biomedicine signal processing wireless communication opinion dynamic in social networks etc. foreign students of mathematics number theory number analysis and decision-making problems in finance are the area of research available in a college.
Sociolinguistic is the area of research available for humanities and social science students.

Course Details:

There will be a “Research Work” for the students with a fixed course number but with a variable number of credits each semester. This course will have credits in multiples of four and a satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (X) grade will be given for each multiple of four credits by the supervisor.
This scheme will serve as a check on the steady progress of the student and will also serve as a warning. A full-time student will register for 16 credits in a semester, while a part-time student will register for 8 credits in a semester.
The grades obtained will form part of the grade card of the student and will be part of his / her degree. Thus if a student registers for the course CS700 with 16 credits, his / her grade will be SSSS or a combination of S and Xes (SSSX, SSXX, SXXX, XXXX). A student obtaining all X grades in two consecutive semesters will have his / her program terminated.
Grades S or X awarded for Research Work will not be placed in the semester grade cards of students.

Should I join the new IIITs like IIIT Guwahati?

IIIT Guwahati seems to be a good option but one must have heard that “All that glitter is not gold”. There are many colleges having people who completed their PhD from IIT. Doing a PhD from an IIT doesn’t make that person a competitive teacher.

Many of them may have acumen but lack teaching abilities. Very few of them are capable. The course structure is a plus point but still one should not join IIIT Guwahati. It is still not well established plus the factor that makes a college good or bad is the quality of students entering them, and its doubt that the student finds a quality bunch of students there.

One of my closest friends is a student of IIIT Guwahati. Through him, I got to know about the institute. Discussed below is a brief overview of the institute.

Infrastructure:

The classes have shifted to a new campus for some time now.
The institute has a fully functional administrative block. Which is also used as a lecture hall, and is air-conditioned, and has proper Wi-Fi connectivity. Only, the ECE labs have faulty AC.
Freshers are provided with double sharing rooms with attached bathrooms. After the first year, boys and girls are given single rooms.
Faculty of IIIT Guwahati get apartments inside the campus.
The library of IIIT Guwahati is not at all satisfactory. There are books mostly related to course subjects only. Even the overall collection of books is quite less in number.

Food:

There is no cafeteria inside the new campus. There is a place for coffee and snacks in the administrative block.
Hostel mess is not at all decent and takes a lot of time in serving food. The catering service providing food, namely South Coast Catering Service, has not improved with time.

Sports:

There is no separate gym or sports complex inside the campus. A temporary field and volleyball court are there for students.
The boys’ hostel has TT table and carrom boards, but none such facilities are present in the girls’ hostel.

Campus Activities:

The cultural-fest Yuvaan is improving with time and with the growth of student-base and funds.
There is an E-cell that organizes entrepreneurial meets, on a large scale with a huge budget of around 15 crores.
There are several clubs for dance, movie, music, quiz, literary, and coding inside the campus.

Faculty:

The department of CSE, ECE, and mathematics have professors who are Ph.D. from IITs, IISc, ISI, and other top universities. HSS department has PhDs from DU, JNU, and IITs.
There is no separate set of science faculty, so those subjects are taught by IIT Guwahati science professors.

Curriculum:

The curriculum is excellent and is entirely industry-need-based, mainly focused on research.
There are changes in the course every year depending upon the present needs. Students are allowed to make suggestions in modification.

Connectivity:

The campus is situated 4 km away from Guwahati airport and 25 km away from the city center. There are weekly bus shuttles, provided by IIIT Guwahati.

Overall, the points above provide a brief scenario about IIIT Guwahati and the conditions of every aspect related to the institute. A student who is a CSE or ECE aspirant can consider IIIT Guwahati as a good choice.

IIIT Guwahati is better than IIIT Sri City. It has an excellent placement record. As per the placement statistics of recent years, the average and highest CTC offered in campus placement are INR 11.59 LPA and INR 32 LPA, respectively. Companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, UpGrad, Toppr Technologies, Tekion, Wipro, etc. are the major recruiters that take part in IIIT Guwahati placements.

The institute has a locational advantage as well. The campus is only 4 km away from Guwahati airport.

Which is preferable for CS, CSE, and IT, IIITDM-Kancheepuram, IIIT Sri City, or IIIT Guwahati?

IIITDM Kancheepuram is an institute of national importance and it has an advantage over the other two institutes as both the institutes are IIITGs in PPP Mode. The bill to declare PPP mode as institutes of national importance is still pending in parliament.

Here are a few pieces of information about the CSE/IT in the campuses mentioned in the question.

IIIT Guwahati:

The institute started in the year 2013 and has a strong CS department with a good number of experienced faculties.

Prof Gautam Barua who is the director of the CS department at IIIT Guwahati was also the director of IIT Guwahati from 2003-13. With his immense experience, he aims to build the department strong.
Coming on to the curriculum of CSE/IT, it is well designed to suit the growing need of the industry. The intent here is to complete all the core subjects in the first 6 semesters so that students can choose the type of industry they want to get into. Like in the 4th semester, there is a subject called Computer Network which is generally a subject of 5/6th semester in other institutes.
In the CS department, IIIT Guwahati has come up with the Ph.D. program as well.
There are many advantages to join IIIT Guwahati but only a single disadvantage is there i.e. Location. But if you love to travel and nature, Guwahati is a place for you.

IIIT Sri City:

The number of faculties at IIIT Sri City is nearly half as compared to IIIT Guwahati.
They also have MS and Ph.D. programs which indicates that they are also very active with regard to research.
They are being mentored by Prof. UB Desai who is also the director of IIT Hyderabad and a pioneer in System and Network Research in India.

Both the colleges have their advantages and disadvantages. You have to analyze which is better for you to pursue B.Tech in CSE/IT as per your parameters. Good luck.

There has been an increase in seat capacity for CSE in recent years and hence there are more chances for students to get admission. Here is the recent JEE Mains cutoff for IIIT Guwahati.

There are two allocation rounds, i.e. JOSAA and CSAB. If you visit the JOSAA website, you will see that the cutoff is small. So, it is better to wait for the CSAB allocation round. There you will be given new branches as a choice. The majority of students hold their choice in the last rounds of JOSAA fearing that they may end up with a bad branch in the CSAB round and that is the reason the closing ranks are so high after the CSAB.

Lastly, there is also a spot round in the Institute in which if you participate your chances of getting a seat increases even further even if you have got a seat somewhere else.

As the hostel rooms at IIIT Guwahati are built for 1 person a room but from this year, it is going to be 2 per room, is it not congested and is anything going to change for the hostel?

Yes, as the rooms were designed and built for a single person per room, thus adjusting two people will make it a little congested. But it would not be a problem as the students will be provided with double-decker beds.

There will be proper space for two tables and chairs. The rooms in the hostel have proper ventilation.

If the student wants to sleep on the floor, they can remove the double-decker beds from their room. They will be provided with two cupboards in one room, each for a student. The students can put all their belongings there.

In comparison with some other institutions such as IIT BHU, where three of the beds are arranged in U-shaped with a table in the center of the room, the condition of IIIT Guwahati is much better.

Even after knowing all these facts, if there is any doubt about the room then you should visit the campus or talk with the current students over there and try to know about any ongoing issue about the same.

Should I prefer IIIT Guwahati and IIIT Bhubaneswar above MIT, Manipal for the ECE branch?

If you are looking for an ECE branch, you may want to consider IIIT Guwahati over IIIT Bhubaneswar and MIT Manipal. IIIT Guwahati is an Institute of National Importance and is centrally funded, while IIIT Bhubaneswar is a state-funded institute and MIT Manipal is a private institute.

IIIT Guwahati has been making significant improvements in terms of infrastructure and placements every year. In contrast, IIIT Bhubaneswar seems to have reached a saturation point with no significant increase in placement or campus facilities.

Moreover, the faculty at IIIT Guwahati encourages research at the undergraduate level. Many seniors have already started researching on AI, ML, cybersecurity, and communication as early as the 3rd semester. This could be an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in research.

Additionally, all the laboratories at IIIT Guwahati are open to access for students who wish to work on personal projects, subject to administration permission, which is easy to obtain. This could be helpful for students who want to gain practical experience beyond the coursework.

In conclusion, if you are interested in pursuing ECE, IIIT Guwahati could be an excellent choice due to its status as an Institute of National Importance, centrally funded status, improving infrastructure and placement record, faculty support for research at the undergraduate level, and open laboratory access.

All the teachers in IIIT Guwahati are very good and are specialized in their own field of expertise. Being a student here, my brother says that every teacher here has their own teaching methodology. Some of the teachers have amazing communication skills while some do not but if you are determined to learn, it becomes easier and interesting.

In the CSE Department, GB Sir is considered to be one of the best according to most of the students. He has experience and expertise in his field. He finds what the students need and he is very good at his work.
Another teacher, DSB sir is very supportive and encouraging with the students. He involves himself with the students in class.
Ferdous Sir inspires students and tries to help out most of the students although being very busy.
Matam sir has great expertise in Computer Networks. He is very fluent, the students are very attentive in his class.
Moumita Ma’am has her own teaching methods. She has a systematic approach to learning which ensures that the students learn that subject.

There are other teachers too who are open to the ideas of students and are encouraging as well as approachable. The CSE department is very fortunate in terms of strong faculty.
