Course Description

Calcutta University M.Sc admission 2023 is ongoing. The provisional merit list of Part-B (Non-CU) candidates for admission to M.Sc programs under the Faculty of Science, Technology, Agriculture, and Home Science will be released on October 30, 2023. Counselling for candidates selected in the first list will be held from October 31 to November 02, 2023.

Calcutta University (CU) offers M.Sc. in Science, Agriculture, and Human Rights & Home Science departments. Each department has a number of sub-departments. Calcutta University M.Sc Course Highlights

The college offers a Master of Sciences (MSc) in various fields.
It is a 2-year full-time course which takes place in offline mode.
The eligibility for the same is based on merit. The candidates require a minimum of 55 percent in the b.sc graduation course except for the MSc in agriculture, which requires an entrance exam.
It offers MSc in various fields ranging from agriculture, mathematics, physics, psychology, genetics and plant breeding, and numerous others.
For any merit-based or entrance-based course, 80 percent of seats are reserved for Calcutta university students, and 20 percent are available for non-CU students.

Calcutta University M.Sc. Syllabus

The Calcutta University offers M.Sc with various specializations such as Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Statistics, Zoology, Botany, Genetics, Electronics, Biotechnology and so on. University of Calcutta offers around 31 streams under M.Sc courses. Candidates having a Graduate Degree in relevant discipline with minimum percentage are eligible to apply M.Sc courses. Calcutta University M.Sc Course Fee

An application fee of rupees 100 for open category students and rupees 50 for reserved category is charged. This year no application fee is being charged by the university. The fee structure is per semester.

Calcutta University M.Sc Eligibility Criteria

The graduates’ candidates must have a BSc degree for a recognized college.
At least 55 percent marks in BSc/BA Hons are required to get admission into the college MSc courses.
The degree must be in relevant disciplines to be eligible for the MSc program.
Admissions in MSc agriculture are entrance-based. This year no entrance exam was held.
Twenty-two percent is reserved SC and 6 percent for ST. The SC/ST students must have 25 percent marks in their graduation to be eligible.

Calcutta University M.Sc Admission Criteria

The admission criteria are strictly merit-based.
8% of seats are reserved for only CU students and are known as part A. The rest 20% is for non-CU students, referred to as part B.
Selection in each course may be run simultaneously from two merit lists, Part A and Part B. Selection is strictly in order of merit.
For the merit list, 60% weightage is given to marks scored in b. SC honors and 40% spends on the marks in the two general subjects.
22% is reserved SC and 6% for ST. The SC/ST students must have 25% marks to be eligible.

Calcutta University M.Sc Placements

Being one of the top universities in India, when it comes to placements, the college offers job offers from the most reputed companies. Companies such as Amazon, IBM, Godrej, TCS, ITC, Accenture, Hewlett Packard were the top recruit tees in 2019. the grades don’t make a difference in getting placements; an average of 60% is good to get placements

Between Calcutta University and Presidency University for a PG, you should opt for Presidency University. Having studied in Calcutta University, I suggest you go for Presidency instead. Calcutta University is known to provide low marks to students. The teachers are part of the board or question setter which doesn't give good marks and a student has to study under them. Apart from this, there are certain colleges that, to improve their grades, give good marks to the students. Both of these cases are not good. Along with this, the marks get worse as the answer sheets are not checked by the college faculty and are instead checked by someone else. The Presidency won over these things. A student scores good marks in Presidency. The teachers are not that strict and they only check the answers sheets. As it's only the college teachers who do the questions and answers work in the exam, once getting familiar with them will help a student score well. Therefore, it's better to opt for Presidency University. Due to its better faculty, facilities and overall experience.

One of my friends was a student of the IEM thus, he had his reasons to make a choice among all the given options which might help you choose a college for yourself. Instead of enrolling for any college under WBJEE, you can try to go for IITs. If you have no luck there, then you should opt for government colleges such as CU, JU, and KGEC. Talking about IEM, you should know IEM provides a good opportunity for the students with all the favorable benefits. Apart from this, Heritage Institute of Technology is not a good choice as the crowd of students doesn’t have any standards. Most of them are enrolled by the management quota. You may also go to other colleges like Techno Main Saltlake otherwise, you can also choose GCETT Serampore, near Kolkata, as it is also a good college.

I have friends who completed their B.Com from Calcutta University and Burdwan University and according to them, it's difficult to get a BCom degree from any of these two universities. Because it is honors, and you must also manage a large syllabus. As far as the curriculum is concerned, Calcutta University and Burdwan University are identical. Even Burdwan University asks the same questions again and over. You will have to put in extra effort to do well in academics at both Burdwan University and Calcutta University. However, Calcutta University has a locational advantage. You will have better access to coaching. Calcutta University is also more recognized.
