Calcutta University's syllabus is standard when compared to Burdwan University. However, it will not help you get good grades, instead, it will develop you in a better way. CU will provide the proper exposure as it is India's first state university with 150+ institutions.

  • If you study in CU and get a 50% or higher on your exams, you are considered to be a good student.
  • Students generally choose Calcutta University over other institutions because there are few good colleges affiliated with universities.
  • The university has switched to a semester structure since last year. So, improved grades can be expected, with quality education.
  • More than 130 colleges are connected with CU. Not all of them are good.
  • Scottish Church, Bethune, Victoria, St. Pauls, Jaipuria, Vidyasagar, and Maulana Azad are just a few of the famous colleges affiliated with CU.
  • These colleges are available to you. You may expect high-quality education here.

For achieving good academic scores, You can also enroll in other institutions such as Burdwan University (Chandannagar College is a great institution), Rabindra Bharati University, or private universities like Techno India or UEM. They are a bit expensive, yet they not only deliver good marks, but also placement prospects. So the choice is yours, if you want to go to CU opt for it or if not go for other colleges.

One of my relatives is an alumnus of Burdwan University, and as per his experience, life at the university is average. You can do the following things during weekends:

  • Visit Burdwan Arcade if you want to do some shopping or go to the movies.
  • There is a science museum and planetarium just opposite the campus. You can give it a visit.
  • If you are looking for food options then Curzon Gate is the best place
  • You can also visit historical monuments or temples around the campus
  • For a picnic or boating experience, visit Sadar Ghat
  • For a fresh morning or evening walk, you can go to Ramanabagan Wildlife Sanctuary.

These are some of the activities you can do over the weekend.

I have many friends who graduated from University of Burdwan and here is their advice.

  • Ask your lecturers and tutors questions. Meet with them during office hours and try to clarify a lecture note, inquire about an essay, etc. This way they will get to know you personally and it will also show that you are willing, devoted, and serious about their topic.
  • Learn about the services that are available to you. The Counselling and Psychological Resources (CAPS), the Faculty of Arts Support Services, and the SRC's free tax refund assistance are just a few of the services available on campus. It's essential to know where to get the services in case you get yourself into a pickle.
  • Have a proper schedule. Get enough sleep daily. Stay healthy. Being sleep deprived during examinations does not help.

These are a few of the things that you should keep in mind if you are planning to join University of Burdwan.

I have friends who completed their B.Com from Calcutta University and Burdwan University and according to them, it's difficult to get a BCom degree from any of these two universities. Because it is honors, and you must also manage a large syllabus.

As far as the curriculum is concerned, Calcutta University and Burdwan University are identical. Even Burdwan University asks the same questions again and over.

You will have to put in extra effort to do well in academics at both Burdwan University and Calcutta University. However, Calcutta University has a locational advantage. You will have better access to coaching. Calcutta University is also more recognized.

I will suggest that you take all these factors into consideration, and choose an institute according to your convenience.

There are better options that you can apply for based on the tests that you took such as CAT, XAT, NMAT, and so on. I would recommend looking into another Tier 2 B-schools that have a national brand name. NITs (NIT Allahabad, NIT Trichy), IMS BHU, IIT Dhanbad, and others are among the few schools that accept lesser scores.

I have a few friends who did their MBA from Burdwan University and according to them, the placement is not quite good. However, the tuition structure is extremely reasonable, and the faculties are excellent. Here are brief placement highlights for Burdwan University.

Placement average 85%
Average CTC  INR 3.5 LPA
Major recruiters  IBM Daksh, Cognizant, HDFC Bank, SBI General Insurance, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Tele-performance, and Concentrix.

It’s best if you look for options other than Burdwan University for your MBA.

Calcutta University is the best option for doing an M.Sc in Physics and here is that preference order that you should follow.

  1. Calcutta University
  2. Burdwan University
  3. Visva-Bharati University
  4. North-Bengal University

Also, you should know that irrespective of which university you are taking, you will have to study on your own. You may get assistance from your professor or your friends. However, you will have to put in the extra effort to do well in your academics and get a job.

It is not a good place if you want to pursue M.Sc as it falls short in faculty. The competition among students is very low. Everyone is just after the marks and not learning anything of substance.

The hostels are also very bad and seminars are held there. You will not be given exposure to the opportunities that your courses can bring about. Placement is an alien topic for them. The success rate at the national level is zero.

One of my friends studied at Calcutta University, so I might be able to give you some details about it.

  • Calcutta University (CU) is one of the oldest functioning institutions in West Bengal.
  • It is popular among students.
  • In Calcutta, most of the colleges are affiliated with CU.
  • The one thing that every CU student is familiar with is their strict grading system.
  • Scoring even a 60% is very difficult. Some students even think this is a good enough score if you are a student of CU.
  • Nowadays top reputed MNCs also demand at least 60% to be able to sit for placements.

Finally, you should keep in mind that other mentioned universities may not be as old and experienced as CU, but they will show a bit of leniency while giving marks. So ultimately the decision is yours, whether you want to study in a reputed university with a strong and reliable alumni network or opt for the easier way out by getting admission to newer institutions.

The Physics department at Presidency University has a number of specializations and the students pursuing M.Sc need to make dissertations as well. A lot of my friends studied at Presidency University and it is definitely better than the University of Burdwan.

The scientific exposure Presidency University provides to its students is more efficient than that provided by the University of Burdwan despite having a qualified and experienced faculty. Presidency University also has tie-ups with foreign universities.

The University of Burdwan has collaborations with funding agencies like UGC, DST, CSIR, ISRO, BRNS, etc. and the faculties have obtained the research projects individually. Presidency University is also very prestigious and is often the first choice for anyone for a number of streams.

I have friends from both the University Institute of Technology Burdwan and Techno India Salt Lake, and according to their opinion, the latter is slightly better.

Burdwan University:

  • University Institute of Technology, Burdwan is a government-run engineering institute. The university is affiliated with the University of Burdwan and has NBA accreditation.
  • It charges around 71,000 annually.
  • The infrastructure of the institute is good. It has a huge campus. Library, playground, and hostels are on campus.
  • The placement record is average. According to the recent placement highlights the highest CTC offered at the institute is 12-20 LPA, while the lowest stays in the range of 5-6 LPA.
  • The industry exposure you will get on campus is also quite limited. As it is located pretty far away from the major industrial sectors located at Kolkata.

Techno India:

  • Techno India Salt Lake is a private college affiliated with WBUT. The total course fee at the institute is around 4.84 lakhs.
  • It does not offer hostel facilities. Additionally, the campus is smaller in size.
  • However, the academic environment at the institute is pretty commendable, unlike many other private engineering colleges.
  • The placement percentage is about 80% to 90%. The average CTC offered is around 4-5 LPA. While the highest CTC offered is 12-14 LPA.
  • The industrial exposure offered is average.
  • It hosts the second-biggest tech fest only following IIT Kharagpur.
  • It is situated in the center of Section V.

After having a closer look at all the prospects of both the institutes, it is best to opt for Techno India Salt Lake, as per what has been witnessed recently.
