IIT Roorkee PG Diploma Eligibility Criteria

Aspirants seeking admissions to PG Diploma courses of IIT Roorkee must satisfy the below-mentioned eligibility criteria:

PG Diploma Surface water hydrology	Bachelor’s degree with Hydrology or M.Sc./M.Tech. from a relevant course. M.Sc. in Statistics or Mathematics with Physics and Mathematics at Bachelor’s level. Candidates from the general category must have completed graduation minimum with an aggregate of 67.5% marks. IIT Roorkee PG Diploma Admission Criteria

IIT Roorkee accepts national level exam scores of the GATE Exam conducted by different IITsfor admissions to Master level courses.
Applicants are shortlisted based on the cut-off set by the administration every year.
The final selection is based on the candidate’s combined performance in GATE exam scores and past academic records.
Candidates who meet the above-mentioned criteria will further be required to appear for counseling divided into different rounds.

GATE Exam

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national-level engineering entrance exam conducted by IISc Bangalore or anyone of 7 IITs to offer admissions to Postgraduate courses in the Science stream across the top colleges of India including IITs, NITs, IISER, and IISc.
A computer-based exam is conducted in online mode, which comprises relevant subjects and is conducted once a year.
A total of 65 MCQs are set in each paper and the weightage is 100 marks per paper.
Around 9 lakh students apply for the GATE exam every year.
GATE is conducted across 210 centers in India. Also, foreign nationals can apply.
The duration of this exam is 180 minutes i.e. 3 hours and the paper is available only in English medium.

IIT Roorkee PG Diploma Course Details

IIT Roorkee offers the Post Graduate Diploma program for a duration of 1 year (s) comprising 2 semesters. The course provides students with skills required for their future studies or career in a related field. Students who want to pursue the course have to complete it on a classroom basis. The one-year PG Diploma program curriculum mainly offers three areas of specialization: Surface Water Hydrology, Ground Water Hydrology, and Watershed management.

IIT Roorkee offers specializations in Post Graduate Diploma in courses in three fields namely PG Diploma in Surface Water Hydrology, PG Diploma in Ground Water Hydrology, and PG Diploma in Watershed management.
All the courses are offered on a full-time and classroom basis only. There is no provision of part-time and distance courses for this course.
The course may also comprise projects and elective subjects in the last semester (s) of the course.
The syllabus and schemes of the first and second semesters are decided by college administration while students can opt for self-study for some subjects in the last semesters.

Program Structure

Course Structure: The maximum duration granted to complete the PG Diploma course is 2 years. The minimum number of working days in the first semester shall be 75 days. In the 2nd semesters, there shall be a minimum of 50 working days. The scheme and syllabi of the first and second semester are assigned by college administrations whereas, students will always be eligible to choose a course of their own choice (if electives are available)
Attendance: Candidates must maintain at least 75% attendance in the entire coursework to eligible for end term examinations
Assessments: Students are assessed based on their performance in internal examinations, assignments such as homework, problem-solving, group discussions, quiz, literature survey, seminar, term-project, etc.
End Term Examinations: Candidates who secure not less than 40% marks in end term examinations will be considered to pass in that semester. Students are provided with elective courses during the final semester of coursework where they can select courses of their own choice.

Ans. No. Students who have opted for the BSc program at IIT Roorkee do not have the option to join the integrated course. Students have to complete the course completely in the session otherwise there is no option of joining an integrated course because both of the courses are entirely different.

IIT Roorkee is essentially a technical school. Core B-Schools such as IMT, IMI, and TAPMI will certainly offer better exposure and placement opportunities in the management domain. These B-Schools have a proven track record of producing skilled managers. As a student of the institute, you will get better exposure and development opportunities.

In terms of ROI, IIT Roorkee placements are good for MBA. The total fees for the course are around INR 8.26 Lakhs, while the average CTC offered is around INR 10.98 LPA. If you want to learn the ropes of management in a typical b-school environment then choosing IMT, IMI or TAPMI will be better.

Last year, my sister was in similar confusion when she was asked to choose between IIT Roorkee and XIMB BM for her MBA. Torn between the two, she decided to do her part of the research on the basis of important parameters like roles offered, placement figures, batch size, and ROI.

Here are a few highlights from the research she conducted and the conclusions she drew:

IIT Roorkee enjoys a good reputation for its MBA program and has given birth to many successful managers.
Some of the great roles offered at IIT Roorkee that set it apart from others are product management, marketing management, and financial analysis among many others.
The small batch size of 66 students at IIT Roorkee improves student-student relations as well as faculty-student relations creating a family-like bond while the huge batch size of 356 students at XIMB BM is a major problem.

What is the reality behind the 1.5 crore package grabbed by IIT Roorkee student?

I am the right person to answer this question as my sister was a batchmate of the student who grabbed a 1.5 crore package offered by Microsoft Redmond. This package was offered to CSE and ECE students.

Microsoft was recruiting based on 2 profiles: Microsoft (Software) India and Microsoft Redmond USA

For Microsoft India, CTC offered was 39 Lakhs and the in-hand salary was 1 lakh per month which is similar to other IT companies.

For Microsoft Redmond, the CTC was 1.5 crore while the in hand was around 45 Lakhs.

Keeping in mind the PPP of USA vs India, the approximate value is 15 LPA. Do you think this is an extraordinary package, considering all the factors I have mentioned? Many companies visiting the campus even offer packages ranging between 20-25 LPA. In fact, an Indian company AppDynamics had offered a package of Rs.45 lakhs with 30 lakhs in hand. Many such offers by Indian companies are better than US companies. It’s just that the international offers are extremely hyped and not many go into details of the monetary value.

It would be unfair to make a comparison between NIT Surathkal and lIT Roorkee, as both institutions have their own strengths and reputations. Yet if I were asked to choose one, I would have definitely gone for IIT Roorkee as it is at a whole different level from NIT Surathkal.

Here are a few reasons that justify my claim:

IIT Roorkee ranks 6 among other IITs
It is Asia's oldest Engineering college
You get the tag of being an IITian
It has an extensive alumni network owing to its early establishment

The only condition under which I would recommend you choose NIT Surathkal over IIT Roorkee is when you are getting CSE at NIT and Metallurgy at IIT Roorkee. Else, choosing IIT Roorkee over NIT Surathkal will always be a wise decision.

The course offers hands-on knowledge in Data/ Data Engineering technologies. It is suitable for anyone with basic programming knowledge, SQL database work, and an inclination toward Data Science. There is many differences in the price as well as the curriculum of the courses offered by E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee, and CloudxLab.

Merits

Your first day at IIT Roorkee will certainly hold a special place in your heart. The first impression is definitely the last impression and so is the first impression of IIT Roorkee. The following answer is based on the experience of a friend.

As she entered, she was thrilled by the beauty of the campus and the infrastructure. She entered the Convocation Hall and got herself registered after a tiresome process. She was then handed a paper ID card.

Next, she was escorted to her assigned hostel which to her dismay was an old and eerie building. Her roommate was in the branch as her and soon she unpacked her belongings and set up her room. By evening, she had interacted with some regarding the Orientation Program.

The next few days were spent in a frenzy with the alarm clock waking her up early in the morning. Students were given a tour of the campus and were also asked to choose their proficiency amongst NCC, NSS & NSO. There was also a test of English where the vocabulary was to be evaluated.

The students were enlightened in basic policies such as curfew timings and no ragging culture.

Students were also given a white-colored T-shirt with IITR’s logo and were asked to run a marathon at 6 am in the morning. The food served at the mess was pathetic.

Overall, the first day at IIT Roorkee is full of surprises and learning new things!
