Course Information

Course Description

Calicut University PhD admission 2023 is ongoing. Admission to PhD is based on an entrance examination conducted by the University Department and the marks obtained in the qualifying examination. Candidates who clear the entrance exam will then be called for an interview at the university. The PhD entrance test will be held on December 02, 2023. The final Admission decision will be a resultant of all the three factors taken together. Check Calicut University Admission 2023

University of Calicut offers full time and part time PhD programs. There are 28 postgraduate teaching and research departments at the university. For admission to either of the research programs offered by the university, candidates must have a Master’s degree in the same or related field of research. Calicut University application form for PhD program is available online on the official university website. Candidates can fill the application form by paying an application fee of INR 890/-. Moreover, the university also offers education through distance learning mode via Calicut University Distance Education.

 

Calicut University PhD Eligibility Criteria

PhD Programs

The University of Calicut offers full-time and part-time research PhD programmes in University departments under the following faculties:

  • Faculty of Science
  • Faculty of Language & Literature
  • Faculty of Humanities
  • Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Journalism
  • Faculty of Fine Arts

Eligibility Criteria for PhD programs:

  • One should have passed Master Degree Examination or a professional degree recognized as equivalent by University of Calicut with at least grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale or equivalent or at least 55% marks.
  • Applicants who have passed M.Phil. degree with a minimum of grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent are eligible to do research work leading to the PhD degree.
  • The ones working in National Laboratories- Universities/Institutes/Government/Private Organization nominated/sponsored by the respective employer and also have a postgraduate or a professional degree with at least grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale or at least 55% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST categories will be given a relaxation of 10% and OBC candidates will be given a relaxation of 5%.
  • One whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva score is pending may be admitted to the PhD programme of the same institution.

The following applicants are exempted from appearing for the Entrance Exam-

  • Those who qualify UGC-NET/JRF, UGC-CSIR-NET/JRF, SLET, GATE and research fellowships of Central and State Government departments/ agencies as approved by the University.
  • Full-time teachers of the University departments/Govt. or Aided Colleges affiliated to the University of Calicut.
  • Foreign nationals who are eligible for admission.
  • Those who have been selected on the basis of a written Test and interview, working in a research project under the guidance of a research guide of the University.
  • M.Phil. Degree holders.

Calicut University PhD Selection Process

Admission to PhD is based on ranking in the entrance examination conducted by the research Department and the marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

About Entrance Test

The entrance exam will be conducted by Research Departments in December. The Candidates who secure minimum 50% marks (40% marks for SC/ST candidates, 45% marks for OBC candidates) in the entrance examination are eligible to apply for registration to the PhD programme.

Admission

Students who have been shortlisted after appearing for the entrance examination, or otherwise eligible, shall apply to the Department/Centre/Affiliated Colleges directly in the prescribed forms along with application fee for admission.

Note:

Those candidates who are exempted from the entrance test can seek admission any time during the academic year.

Those candidates who wish to appear for the entrance exam in 2 different disciplines should contact the concerned departments so that the departments could make the necessary arrangements to conduct the exam accordingly.

How to Apply for Calicut University PhD?

You can apply for PhD program through online mode on the official website of Calicut University.

  • You can pay application and entrance examination fee to Calicut University Fund by e-payment (SBT online/SBT e-challan/Friends/Akshaya e-challan/Payment gateway).
  • Visit official admission website of Calicut University and Click on “Fee Remittance” link. Select the purpose 'Application and entrance examination fee for PhD admission.
  • The print out of the application duly attested with e-challan receipt should reach the Head of the University Teaching Departments on or before the last date. In case of those subjects which have not been offered in the Teaching Departments of this University, the applications, in that case, should be submitted to-

Note:

The online registration ID number is mandatory for downloading hall tickets. Students should keep the ID number for all future communications. Hall tickets for the entrance examination should be downloaded 3 days prior to the examination day.

Shortlisted students after the entrance examination, or otherwise eligible should apply directly for admission to the Department or Centre or Affiliated Colleges (based on their preference) in the prescribed forms along with the application fee.

Candidates have to apply for entrance test and pay the fees separately if they are applying for two different disciplines.

General candidates: INR 550/-

SC/ST candidates: INR 235/-

Eligible candidates after the entrance examination should apply for admission in the prescribed format along with a challan of Rs.50/-.

Here are few rules and regulations that are to be followed as per the university organization, which are listed as follows:-

  1. Inclusiveness: Opportunity for one and all to do research, registration on liberal basis and joining of teachers from any school for part time research without attempting entrance examination.
  2. Openness: Research guide-ships to all non-faculty members, liberal attitude towards every affiliated college for promoting research, permanent affiliation after ten successful years and all teaching departments are deemed to be research centers.
  3. Quality Measures: Course work made compulsory, research publication obligatory and check measures against fake practices in research.
  4. More Research Opportunity: Research positions of guide increased from five to eight and all faculty members become research guides from their date of joining.
  5. Protecting Civil Rights: Measures to curb unethical research.
  6. Evaluating Mechanisms: Simple but smooth evaluating mechanisms and time-bound evaluation made compulsory.

Calicut University PhD Seat Reservation

  • SC/ST : 20% of the seats shall be reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to be filled up on merit basis.
  • Out of the 5% reserved for Scheduled Tribes, one percent (1%) or five seats, whichever is higher, are reserved for Primitive Tribes in the districts of Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad.
  • 20% of the seats for admission will be reserved as management quota.
  • 10% of the seats will be reserved for the community to which the college belongs (this will be 20% in the case of colleges belonging to Backward Communities)
  • 50% of the seats will be reserved for admission on open merit. (40% in the case of colleges belonging to backward communities).

Visit the university website and fill out the Transcript application form. Keep in mind that the fees mentioned are old and it has been revised but the application can be used.  Documents required -  Duly filled application form Copies of degree or provisional certificate Copies of Marksheets Academic request form Online payment receipt or Challan To get transcripts of more than one course, you need to pay the fees separately and submit separate applications.  The transcript application should be forwarded to The Controller of Examinations, University of Calicut, Calicut University (Post), Malappuram district, Kerala - 673 635.  Total required fees - Fees per document, search fees (as applicable), postage charge (as required for the destination country), postage charge for personal copy (if opted). The total fees for a course can be submitted as a single challan.  The application needs to be submitted by the candidate or by the verification agency/employer. The university takes around 40-50 days from the acceptance of application, to process the transcripts.

There are many things that you can do at Calicut University during the weekend.  You can visit Calicut beach. It is great to take a stroll, especially during the evening.  There are many interesting cafes around the city, especially next to the beachfront. Some of the popular cafes are Gudhaam Art Cafe, British Cafe, Adaminte Chaya Kada, etc.  There are also places like Jellyfish Water Sports which can be an ideal weekend getaway.  You can also go on small trips to nearby places like Wayanad. It is a scenic district next to Kozhikode.  There are also many other tourist spots of historical and cultural interest that you can visit.

If you are talking about the same paper then you can’t take the supplementary examination as well as improvement examination in the same semester at Calicut University. Let’s say you fail in paper A in the first semester and scored a B grade in paper B. During the third semester, you can write any paper of the first semester, if you pay the required fees. For paper B you will need to take an improvement examination and for paper A you need to take a supplementary examination.

Both Calicut and IGNOU offer valid distance education degrees. You can choose any of these institutes for a distance learning course. As degrees offered by IGNOU and Calicut University are UGC-DEB approved.  However, IGNOU degrees are more recognized in the country. For Govt. sector jobs degrees from both these universities are valid and eligible.

Calicut University offers 2 types of exams to compensate for below minimum marks: Improvement Exam Supplementary Exam If you are referring to an Improvement Exam to increase marks of an exam you have already given then the answer is no. But if you are referring to the Supplementary Exam to pass an exam you haven’t obtained minimum marks in yet, the answer is yes. There might be some chances for the same. You cannot apply for an improvement paper if you have obtained your provisional degree certificate. This is because once you receive the provisional certificate it means you have successfully passed the course and no further changes can be made.  Any more doubts can be further addressed to the University Exam Wing. Just make sure to keep important documents within reach.

You must have a provisional certificate and consolidated mark list, a CSS (Compulsory Social Service) work record, a GPA for each semester (which can also be obtained from the B.Tech section at Pareeksha Bhavan), SSLC, and +2 certificates. To obtain a Provisional certificate and a Consolidated mark list, you must:  Pass all of the course subjects. Get your overall GPA for all semesters. Go to Tagore Nikethan and fill out the form for a provisional certificate/mark sheet. Then proceed to the inquiry section and request payment for the same. In Tagore Nikethan, pay for chalan. Fill out the application form now. Take the application form and chalan to the Pareeksha Bhavan B.tech Section. The application will be reviewed, and you will receive both PC and CML by the evening. To obtain a degree certificate, you must apply online through the university's website. These are the required steps.
