As per UGC regulations for Ph.D. programs, the minimum eligibility conditions that Rai University Ph.D. applicants need to fulfill are:
- A Postgraduate degree with a minimum aggregate of 55% or equivalent grade B in the UGC 7-Point scale.
- In the case of a degree awarded by a foreign university, the qualification should be accredited and recognized as equivalent to its Indian counterpart.

Selection Criteria
- Admission is on the basis of a common entrance test conducted by Rai University. Candidates are required to score a minimum of 50% on the entrance test to be considered for the further selection process.
- Candidates who qualify the written test are invited for a round of Interview with the Department Research Committee. The interview will focus on the proposed research topic.
The following applicants will be exempted from appearing in the Ph.D. entrance test. However, they will have to qualify the Interview round with the Department Research Committee.
- Applicants who have obtained more than 75 percentile or 75% in the latest GATE.
- Applicants who have qualified in NET/ SLET/JRF.
- Applicants holding a recognized M.Phil. degree.

As per UGC Regulations 2016’s Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree, Rai University Ph.D. students are required to complete the course work in the first semester. Candidates holding an M.Phil. degree may be exempted by the concerned department from the course work.

- The Research Methodology Course has two components: Part A which is Common for all disciplines, and Part B is Subject-specific. 100 marks of Research Methodology is split between Part A and Part B as 70 and 30 marks respectively)
- At the end of course work, students are evaluated through a written exam of 100 marks. Subject-specific assignment and seminar presentation is also evaluated by Respective Guide/ External Examiner for 50 marks each.
- Following the successful completion of course work, students may proceed to their research work and presentation of dissertation/ thesis.
