MTech VLSI Technology FAQs

Ques: Which one should I choose VLSI or Embedded systems of M. Tech?

Ans. Electronics and Communication Engineering is broadly classified into two sectors viz. VLSI and the embedded systems, with respect to the manufacturing processes adopted by the industry. Both of these are equally beneficial and opportunistic fields, which increase one’s expertise.

The students must consider their area of interest, that is, whether they like coding more or do they like the assembling of the chips and all the other practical work that goes on with it. The students must also consider the amount of knowledge they have in these topics and only then must they go with that particular option.

Ques: What does VLSI mean?

Ans. In Engineering, VLSI stands for Very Large Scale Integration. This integration may consist of circuits, designing of these circuits, etc. The VLSI allows the students from engineering to apply their practical knowledge via participating in manufacturing in the telecommunications field.

Ques: What are the job opportunities for M. Tech VLSI Technology?

Ans. The job opportunities in the field of VLSI technology are immense, throughout the world. In India, the job opportunities within the field will surely be increasing in the coming future as the manufacturing of electronics goods will take a high road. NIT Trichy has great placements for branches like CSE and ECE. Most of the recruiting companies give preference to B.Tech students rather than M.Tech. But as far as Communications Engineering is concerned, you will be allowed to appear for placement drives held by semiconductor companies with B.Tech students.

There are quite a few companies that prefer Communications students over VLSI. Many students end up being placed in dream semiconductor companies. Out of say, 35 students, only 1 or 2 are not placed. The placements are definitely improving over the years.

It is advisable to have basic coding knowledge at least along with your core subject. That way, you will definitely be able to do well.

MTech placements for the ECE branch at IIT Kharagpur depend a lot on your specialization.

Those under VLSI and VIPES get placed with great packages and there are almost cent percent placements for them. VLSI students are usually offered core jobs in contrast to VIPES which offers both core and non-core jobs. There are a lot of software profiles offered to VIPES students.

Communication also has decent placements but not the same certainty as VLSI. Here companies like Qualcomm come for placements and some even are offered software profilers
