M.Tech Earthquake Engineering: What is it about?

Tech in Earthquake Engineering has been narrowly defined as the study of the behavior of structures and geo-structures subject to seismic loading. It is considered as a subset of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, etc. However, the tremendous costs experienced in recent earthquakes have led to an expansion of its scope to encompass disciplines from the wider field of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, and from the social sciences, especially sociology.

The main objectives of earthquake engineering are:

  • Predict the future effects on urban areas and civil infrastructure of major earthquakes.
  • Plan, build, and maintain structures that meet standards and comply with building codes when exposed to earthquakes.

Why study M.Tech Earthquake Engineering?

Engineers will collect and conduct research on data from various sources and locations and then find solutions to render earthquake-resistant structures. This is the prime responsibility of the earthquake engineers.

  • Beneficial for planning, constructing, and maintaining buildings that meet standards and comply with building codes when exposed to earthquakes.
  • They can apply the basic principles for seismic design and construction of structures in accordance with the provisions of International Building Codes.
  • In civil engineering applications, they would be able to understand the principles of dynamic equations of motion and perform research for dynamic systems.

M.Tech Earthquake Engineering: Admission Process

  • Admission to the Master of Technology in Earthquake engineering is based on the scores secured by the candidates in GATE.
  • Some institutes also admit candidates on the basis of UGC and CSIR scores.
  • Institutes participate in the CCMT process for the final selection of the students.
  • Registration for CCMT is done online. Candidates have to include different details when filling out the CCMT application form, including GATE scores. After that, applicants must pay the application fee for CCMT 2023, followed by the filling and locking of choices.

M.Tech structural engineering at IIT Madras is both challenging and rewarding. IITM is a prestigious institution, and its tag holds a lot of value both inside and outside of India.

Time will pass very quickly during this course, and by the end of it, you’ll feel that there’s still a lot more to learn. The environment is quite competitive. If you’ll miss your lectures, it’ll be very hard to understand basic concepts while preparing for exams.

Some professors are very likable, but you’ll not like the teaching style of many. Added to it is the tremendous workload. You’ll be overwhelmed by the never ending assignments. You won’t be spoon fed by anyone. You’ll get the reference books, syllabi and lecture notes, but you’ll have to study by yourself on a regular basis.

Work hard by yourself, and show keen interest in learning. The professors will be happy to guide you and work with you, given that you show proper interest. They publish lots of research material every year, and are in constant search of good students to help them.

Your career will get a positive direction at IIT Madras if you’ll work hard and make the most of your time on campus.

IIT Delhi and IIT Madras offer a Post-Graduation in Construction Technology and Management. To secure a seat at either of the institutes, you must obtain a good rank in the GATE examination.

IIT Delhi gives more weightage to the technical aspects of the course, while NICMAR focuses more on the managerial aspects of Construction. The curriculum of the course is unmatched, yet the placements, at times, can be quite unanticipated.

Both the courses are quite equivalent to each other on various stages whatsoever. But, when the decision boils down to which among the both is better, then IIT Delhi might win the race.

Now, the Transportation Engineering department from IITs is indeed a great course. The average package some of my seniors from this course secured was about INR 5 LPA. However, by all means, your placement partially also depends upon whether or not you are typically prepared for it.

Having to know some people studying in both these colleges, I can say that they are equally good. You can opt for any one of them, their respective programs are also good. They are recognized as Centres of Excellence by MHRD, Govt of India.

The choice mainly depends on the individual and their preferences. You should go for the one you are enthusiastic about.

  • NITIE offers 3 courses, where the selection is through GATE scores.
  • These include Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering, Project Management, and Manufacturing Management.
  • These courses are a mixture of technical and business management.
  • IITs offer M.Tech through GATE exam scores.
  • It involves core specialization and nothing about industrial management.

So, the selection of the college and the course entirely depends on you. Go through them and then decide which will be a better option for your career.

The M.Tech program of Environmental Geotechnology at NIT Calicut is an interdisciplinary branch.

In the first semester, you will be taught about Geotechnological Engineering and in the second semester, you will learn about subjects that are in Environmental Engineering such as Groundwater Hydrology.

All in all, this course is more towards the Geotechnical side than the Environmental side. You also have to undertake projects. Usually, most people opt for Geotechnical projects.

Talking about the prospects of the future, L&T has been the only recruiters for some years now they recruited very few students pursuing postgraduate.

If you want to teach this course in the future, then pursuing it will be a good idea. It is definitely a good course but not the best. Join if you are interested in the course and not for the NIT tag.

It’s sad to say but MTech students do not attract very good companies for placements. The companies prefer students with experience. BTech students prepare well in advance either for MBA or coding to get placements in IT or banking companies. MTech students are not allowed to do so and thus are unable to secure good packages.

Now the question arises, what should MTech students do to guarantee a safe career? Well, I will suggest that they prepare for GATE again and clear PSU or some other Engineering service.

You can even enter Academia but the salary packages will also be average. Another option is to go for a Ph.D. but this too has no career prospects. The most guaranteed way is to clear PSU.

IIT Bombay Civil Engineering branch is well known for its programs like Master, Dual Degrees, and BTech. Candidates with good profiles have a wide range of opportunities. BTech students are preferred for Non-core jobs whereas MTech students are preferred for MTech students.

Some jobs offered to students belonging to the Civil Engineering branch at IIT Bombay are

  1. Structural Designer: Top companies like Dar Al, Walter P Moore, and Thornton Tomasetti offer this role. Around 1 to 4 students are hired for such roles by each company. The most important criteria are CPI and your proficiency in software.
  2. Site Engineer: These roles are offered by companies like SP group, and LnT Look. You are tested usually on the basics of civil engineering and your ability to give long-term commitment.
  3. Management Trainee: Many civil companies offer management profiles also. Students with extracurricular backgrounds with reasonable academics are usually preferred for such roles. Some companies from the Middle East also offer such profiles.
  4. Teaching: In the last few years many private universities hire Masters's students directly for Assistant Professor posts. They are required to start their Ph.D. in less than a year.
  5. Other Sub branches: Companies for water resources, Geo-tech, and Surveying offer very few roles. A few companies such as Dar Al open these profiles too.
  6. Non-Core Companies: Companies in the fields of investments, analytics, Banking, etc either don't open for M.Tech students or are not short-listed for interview.

100% placement at IIT Bombay is just a myth and you have to work hard to secure a job.

M.Tech in Earthquake Engineering at IIT Roorkee would provide students with a strong understanding of the science and engineering of earthquakes and how to design structures to withstand them.

Some of the potential career opportunities include jobs in consulting firms, government agencies, construction companies, or research institutions, where you would use your knowledge of earthquake engineering to design and evaluate buildings and other structures for seismic safety. You can also pursue research or enter Academia.

The scope of M.Tech in earthquake engineering at IIT Roorkee depends on where you will be showcasing your learned knowledge and skills. Not many industries understand the skills gained through Earthquake Engineering. But the course delivers the finest concepts of structural behavior which eventually helps you to climb the ladder as a structural. You may find your skills go to waste as many people devalue and belittle this branch but trust me it has great scope in the future. The best part is that you can pursue both structural engineering and structural dynamics as a student of Earthquake engineering.
