BSc Statistics Syllabus: First Year Subjects  

  • Inequalities: Inequality is a relation, it makes a non-equal comparison between two numbers. Mostly used to compare two numbers on the number line by their size.
  • Differential Calculus: Differential calculus deals with the rate of change of one quantity with respect to another. For example, the rate of change of x with respect to y is expressed as dx/dy.
  • Demoivre’s theorem: To find roots of complex numbers De Moivre's theorem is used. It is also used to solve complex numbers raised to powers.
  • Equations theories, Fundamental theorem of algebra and its consequences: Fundamental theorem of algebra, proved by Carl Friedrich Gauss states that every polynomial equation of degree n with complex number coefficients has n roots.
  • Review of Integration and Definite Integrals: Definite integral means a number when the lower and upper limits are constants and indefinite integral represents a family of functions whose derivatives are f.

  • Probability Theory: Probability theory is concerned with probability. There are several different probability interpretations, it treats the concept in a rigorous mathematical manner.
  • Index Numbers: An index number evaluates variations in a variable or group of variables in regard to geographical location, time, and other features.
  • Statistical Methods: The two main statistical methods are used in data analysis, which summarizes data using indexes and inferential statistics, which draws conclusions using statistical tests.
  • Mathematical Finance: Financial mathematics can be applied to investing strategies. It is the understanding of how to analyze data and make predictions that can help make smart investments. 
  • Utility and Production Functions: Production function, isoquants indicate the combination of two inputs that produce the same level of outputs and in the utility function, indifference curves show the combination that gives the consumers the same level of utility.

  • Stratified Random Sampling: Stratified random sampling involves the division of a population into smaller subgroups known as strata. It is formed based on members' shared attributes or characteristics.
  • Numerical Analysis: Numerical analysis solves continuous problems using numeric approximation. It involves designing methods that give approximate but accurate numeric solutions.
  • Inverse Interpolation: Process of finding the value of the argument corresponding to a given value of the function, between two tabulated functional values.

  • Numerical Integration: The approximate computation of an integral using numerical techniques is Numerical Integration. The numerical computation of an integral is called quadrature.
