There are two options that you can pursue after an integrated M.Sc in photonics at CUSAT.

Industry Jobs - The jobs offered by the photonics industry of India are mostly sales. Yes, there are jobs in the telecommunications industry especially in the fiber optics sector which could fetch you some very good technical roles as well.

Research - Photonics is one of the very interesting topics to research upon. The field offers some very good opportunities in India as well as abroad. However, very few educational institutions in India have a photonics department and they also prefer physics students when they hire their professors. So getting a teaching job may also become difficult.

Anyway, if you are really interested in the subject then nothing should come between your choice because opportunities will appear over time.

Academically, the MSc Physics course at IIT Roorkee is dynamic. Some of the courses have repeated topics but for someone who is really into physics, the curriculum definitely suits his taste.

The research work conducted by the professors covers vast topics like string theory, theoretical high energy physics, quantum optics, fiber optics and lasers, nuclear physics, astrophysics, nano-materials, and condensed matter.

The lab facilities of this department are very lucrative for working with quantum optics, low-temperature superconductivity, functional materials, and lasers. The overall program lays more emphasis on experimental physics. The research enthusiasts get excellent research work in top research institutes during their summer internships which will enhance their learning experience tenfold. Students also get to visit famous places in India, Germany, the US, Australia, etc. and also publish great works. Some of the most common places include IISc, Bangalore, BARC, PRL, TIFR, IUCAA, SINP, and IIT in India whereas CERN, and Max Planck Institutes in Germany, Wisconsin, and Georgetown in the US amongst others.

Many consider the department a bit laid back with a less structured curriculum. However, real enthusiasts have been able to convert this weakness into strength by not solely relying on the curriculum but exploring much more. The Physics Journal Club and the number of papers published by students in PRD, PRL, MNRAS, CjP, etc. are a testament to that.

Despite very less scope in India, IIT Roorkee has been able to carry Physics to a great extent. The program needs a little revision, only the ones who are truly Physics lovers can pursue this course.

There are many reasons why I will suggest you to go for IIT Kharagpur for applied geology and exploration geophysics. Some of these reasons include,

  • Being an older IIT, IIT KGP has a much broader alumni base than Roorkee which in turn proves to be useful for higher education.
  • In case you lose interest in Core geology you are always open to sitting for non-core placements which are in abundance at IIT KGP because of the alumni network.
  • The curriculum at IIT KGP is way better than Roorkee in the sense that it is rigorous and much more industry relevant than Roorkee.
  • IIT KGP has good administrative support and one can get funded for conferences.
  • Being an MSc course, you can avail INSPIRE Scholarship given that you have a good GPA.

These points are more than enough of a deciding factor for you.

If physics is your passion, and you genuinely want to learn, this is not the place for you. One of my friends studied here and these are some things he mentioned.

  • The faculty is good but they have limited course material. You would not feel like you have learned much.
  • Most students take up physics in their final years because they know they can easily memorize the course material and pass. This is just so that they can improve their grades.
  • Mugging up theories is definitely not how someone can learn science.
  • They don’t have a real interest in the subject anyway and they would be your peers.
  • The system at Fergusson is not great and you wouldn’t want to attend classes as it would not matter and you will pass your exams regardless.

If you are only looking for a college life minus the studies and want to have some fun with fests and events, by all means, join Fergusson because marks and knowledge are secondary here.

The BSc course in Physics at MSU Baroda is at par with the top institutes like IISERs and IITs.

The infrastructure is the best in the whole of Gujarat state. The faculty for this course however is a bit lacking in comparison to other courses. Some are not skilled enough while some are not interested in teaching at all.

The laboratories are decked with decent equipments but during the First and Second years, they are almost of no use. The third year has a lot of lab sessions that should not be missed

The theoretical exams are pretty easy as most of the questions are based on what has been taught in the class.

MSU has 2 major libraries ( SSMT and SHMT) that have a wide range of books on almost every subject.

Research is mainly conducted in areas of condensed matter, Spectroscopy, X Ray diffraction and Nuclear Physics. Seminars and conferences are held throughout the year on campus.

My opinion is that MSU is not much of a good choice for a BSc in Physics, especially if you are coming from a state other than Gujarat.

Yes, you can get a seat in Physics Hons. in Ravenshaw University.  But may take a 2nd or 3rd list for your name to appear.

Though they have changed the admission process, with an 80% in your CBSE board exams, it won't be hard for you to earn a seat.

The only chances you won't be getting a seat is if this year's average 12th marks have risen higher or none of the first list students are leaving Ravenshaw for other opportunities.

If you consider the physics branch, Deshbandhu college is a better choice. Here are some reasons to consider it over Swami Shraddhanand College for a B.Sc in physics:

  • Their physics department is really good with a highly experienced faculty.
  • They have good laboratories and over 20 lab assistants in the physics department.
  • The library consists of a really good collection of Physics books as well as other reading and research materials.
  • Their students' performance is very good in exams like JAM or JEST.
  • They have a Physics Society and many activities are organized by this society of Deshbandhu college. It is said to be really good.
  • If you are thinking of college placements and it is your concern then forget to get placed from any of these colleges.
  • The only way is to prepare for IIT JAM, JEST, etc. exams for further studies in physics.

The connectivity of transportation of Deshbandhu college is better than the Swami Shraddhanand college because it is far away outside Delhi that is the college is located on karnal GT road. Therefore, choose the one that meets your requirements.
