Bachelor of Library and Information Science [B.Lib.I.Sc]

B.Lib course is of 1-year duration which is furthur sub-divided into 2 semesters in most of B.Lib colleges. Knowledge organization and processing, basics of Information technology, documentation and information retrieval and few project works are a part of Bachelors of Library and Information Science course. A student has to appear for written exams twice that year.

Candidates enrolled in Bachelor of Library and Information Science course will be evaluated on the basis of Internal assessment and written exams that take place twice a year, in the months of June and December. Internal Assessment weightage is of 20 marks while written exam is of 80 marks that together make 100 marks for each subject studied.

Essentials of management, Library Management-general aspects, Library authority and library committee, Staffing, Care & preservation of library resources (printed and digital), Financial management in libraries, Resources Mobilization including outsourcing. 

This course teaches a student the methods and ways to manage a library and IT center.

Knowledge Organization and Information Retrieval

Knowledge organization and subject organization, Concept and theory of library classification, Normative principles of library classification, Normative principles of library cataloguing, Subject heading lists and Thesaurus, Concept of Abstract and Abstracting, Keyword Indexing.

Objective of allotting this course is to make students learn the tricks and ways to organize knowledge and subject.

Information Sources

Concept of information sources, Primary sources of information, Secondary sources of information, Tertiary source of information, Human resource, Information centers, Institutional information sources, Mass media, Database.

Through this, different types of information sources are described to a student.

Information Users, Systems and Services

Information users and their information needs, Specific techniques of user studies– Scenario analysis, Interaction analysis, Delphi method, Repertory grids, Evaluation of user survey, International information systems, Organization of reference section.

Through this concept, scope, content and methodology of user studies is taught to students.

Library and Information Technology (Theory)

Computer technology-History, classification and generation of computers, Programming Languages, Algorithm & Flow Charting, Reprographic technology, Micrographic technologies, Social networking and Library blogs, Concept and need of library automation.

The course tells a student about theoretical aspects of IT and library automation.
