IGNOU is believed to be better than SOL in so many ways. Some of them are mentioned below:
All of the approved programs are well-known.
Simple admission, re-admission, submission of examination forms, submission of assignments, and other processes. The majority of these can be completed online.
Nominal Charge.
Excellent study materials.
If you misplace your study materials, you can purchase them online from GPH, Neeraj, or another publishing house.
30% of the marks are for assignments, and the rest are for the exam. Because assignments are similar to examination question papers (i.e., sample question papers), you are also preparing for the examination while working on them.
Any query and doubts can be easily got answered by visiting study centers. For IGNOU students, each center has a coordinator and other staff.
Study centers can be found even in the most remote areas, and you can usually find one within 15 kilometers of your home.
IGNOU is also very flexible in that it allows students to complete their degrees in a reasonable amount of time. You are not required to complete all exams at once. It is possible to divide it into semesters. This will also aid in the removal of mental burdens.
The passing criteria is really low, achieving this will not be a problem. You have to score at least 33% in every subject, out of 75. If you successfully receive this score, you will clear your first year.
If you scored lower than 33% in any one of the subjects, your promotion will be stopped. You then have to give ER (Essential Repeat) the following year, which is in your 2nd year.
It is quite possible to give ER for only 4 subjects. If it was more than 4 then you will fail and have to repeat the year again.
One of my friends graduated from DU SOL. According to him there are certain things you learn which will be beneficial for your career ahead.
It is suggested that you go for DU SOL only if it's your remaining option. Because some reviews of the placements are not that good, also if you want to prepare for UPSC, do it without getting involved in a college schedule. Though the time is flexible, ultimately it is your choice.
No, you won’t be promoted to next year in DU SOL, if you fail in all subjects. You will have to repeat that year. You will be promoted to the next year if you fail in less than 50% of the examinations. You will have to take the back examination for those subjects next year.
There is no difference between the courses followed by SOL at the University of Delhi. However, once the semester system was started in the regular colleges under the University, some differences have been seen. There is nothing to worry about, though. The syllabus of SOL is good.
The courses offered in SOL are year wise whereas the coursework of the regular colleges is semester-wise. SOL is basically for those candidates who are also employed. All the processes are carried out online. It offers courses like M.A., M.Com, B.Com (Hons.), etc.
Unfortunately no, there is no provision for transfer from SOL to a regular college at University of Delhi. It is so because SOL is an institution in itself, like any other college.
You can try to migrate into some other college but you will not be granted admission if your scores in SOL exams are not very high.
The students of SOL are often looked down upon when compared to regular colleges. Your marks will be scrutinized before you are allowed to migrate to the college. Most students are turned down because that would mean an increase in the workload.
IGNOU is better for correspondence graduation. It has more courses available for correspondence graduation, compared to SOL DU. IGNOU has regional centers and examination centers all across the country. For SOL DU, you will have to visit Delhi, for examinations. In terms of coordination, availability of courses, and quality of education, IGNOU is the obvious choice for correspondence graduation.
Since my brother is a student of the School of Open Learning (University of Delhi), he was able to offer better insight on the topic. Here is what he had to say about the improvement rule mandated by the institute.
So, if you want to opt for an improvement, you need to fill the UnderTaking form. Attach your original mark sheet with the form. In case you didn’t get the original mark sheet, you can contact SOL.
I have a few friends from SOL DU and here is their advice to get a better score in the examinations.
Hope this helps answer your question.
According to some of my friends who attended DU SOL, colleges are allotted but not on a frequent basis, just for Personal Contact Program classes only. These PCP classes are held in various colleges across DU and you will get assigned a college to attend these classes.
Further, they will assist you with the study material. So it's upon you whether you want to attend classes or want to study at home by yourself.
These classes are held on Saturday and Sunday. Also, these are not compulsory to attend. You won’t be able to enjoy the life of a regular student and will be able to attend only PCP classes in the allotted college.
