• The University of Alberta offers an MD with Special Training and Research for a duration of 4 years or 5 terms program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis only.
  • The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry provides this program to undergraduate medical education (UME) students.
  • This program is designed for those students who wish to participate in the research above what is offered within the UME curriculum.
  • UME students join a research team and directly engage in biomedical research while concurrently fulfilling MD with Special Training and Research requirements (application, presentations, reporting, defense).
  • Students that successfully complete their MD degree and all requirements of the program receive the designation of Special Training in Research on their degree parchment and transcript.
  • The main objective of this program is:
    • to foster a greater awareness of the importance of research to UME students.
    • provide opportunities for UME students to participate in fundamental or clinical research during a 24-week research program.
    • provide formative feedback to help develop UME student skills in critical thinking, writing, and presentation.
    • provide formal recognition of students that show a good practical understanding of the scientific process, including development, formulation, and testing of hypotheses, experimental design, validation, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Students can apply for various types of scholarships like Alberta Blue Cross Scholarship in Dentistry, Alberta Dental Association and College Awards, Albert Bodnarchuk Award in Dentistry, etc.
  • The MD program is dedicated to the improvement of health through excellence and leadership in our educational programs, in fundamental and applied research, and in the prevention and treatment of illness.
  • Students get the opportunity to participate in the design and execution of a peer-reviewed research project, present results, and defend conclusions.
