Gallaudet University, the only institute of its kind, is a Liberal Arts University specifically for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People. The university offers admissions to graduate and post-graduate programs for all candidates seeking to study in USA but the undergraduate programs are only reserved for applicants with special needs. Students get the option of choosing from more than 40 major and minor bachelor's degrees in 10 departments and over 25 postgraduate programs. 

Popular programs at the institute include Art and Digital Media, American Sign Language and Deaf Studies, Business, Educational Neuroscience, among others. Gallaudet University admissions are really selective, with an acceptance rate of only 57.1%. Those who aspire to be admitted here must have an average SAT score between 790-1080 and an ACT score between 15-20

Gallaudet University International Admissions

International students who want to seek admissions at Gallaudet University can follow the below-mentioned application process:

Application Portal: Students can apply via the Online Application Form.

Application Fee: 50 USD for undergraduate students and 75 USD for graduate students.

Basic Admission Requirements:

  • English Proficiency Test Scores (TOEFL/IELTS).
  • Standardized test scores (ACT/SAT).
  • Financial certification to prove that you have enough funds to cover all the costs for at least one year. These costs include tuition fees and other living expenses.
  • Academic record or transcripts. If the transcripts are not in English then it should be translated in English and evaluated by one of the agencies: AACRAO International Education Services ( fee: 190 USD), World Education Services (fee: 160 USD).
  • An essay on the topic provided in the online application
  • Audiogram test is required by the University (deaf or hard to hear students).
  • Copy of passport as ID proof

English Proficiency Test Scores

International applicants need to have TOEFL or IELTS scores.  There is no minimum required score set by the university. Deaf applicants need to send a certified copy of the audiogram to University to get waived from the auditory section of TOEFL.

Student Visa Requirements

International students will require an appropriate visa, F-1 or J-1 visa to study in the US for the offline programs at the Gallaudet University.

Documents Required:

  • Submit the completed application.
  • Standardized test scores(ACT/SAT). Although University accepts both scores, students are encouraged to take the ACT. For English and general studies classes, the ACT Writing is considered.
  • Copy of transcripts from high school.
  • One essay was originally written by the candidate
  • one video American Sign Language essay.
  • Photo ID proof.
  • An audiogram test ( for deaf or hard of hearing applicants).
  • A letter of recommendation.
  • Certificate of finances form and sponsor's affidavit. These forms must be submitted to RSIA before June 30 for fall admissions and before November 30 for spring admissions.

The applicant doesn't require to have a specific level of ASL knowledge before admission, rather they are encouraged to participate in the Summer Jumpstart program or to take ASL online classes.

ISSP (International Special Student Program) Admissions

International hearing applicants may apply as non-degree seeking students through the ISSP. The program is for up to one year. The program is at the undergraduate level.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree or the highest level training available in their country with a GPA of 3.0.
  • Transcripts from the previously attended institutions.
