A type of student-designed major, Open Studies is available through petition to an admissions administrative committee.

The University of Illinois School of Music offers students a unique educational experience. It’s the best of both worlds—a small, highly selective music program within a large, world-class university. As a student, you'll develop your musicianship by performing, composing, teaching, researching, and innovating through technology. Plus, you’ll benefit from a broad-based comprehensive education that includes the opportunity for course work in departments throughout campus. Our program is designed for your academic success and to prepare you for a rewarding career!

Open Studies allows students to focus on diverse fields such as music of other cultures, piano pedagogy, or other areas not included in the majors above. Open Studies requires completion of the common requirements for all BMUS degrees and a minimum of 130 semester hours of credit for graduation.
