The General option is intended for those pursuing a liberal arts education with special emphasis on literature and writing; students can focus their General option programs by taking electives in one of several defined tracks or individually tailor their programs in consultation with the departmental adviser. Students interested in teaching middle or high school English must complete the Single Subject Credential (SSC) option and meet minimum GPA requirements to be eligible for certification of subject area competency.

Students majoring in English must obtain departmental advisement prior to or during their initial quarter of major coursework. Those majoring in English are urged to acquire command of at least one language other than English.

The total number of units required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in English is 120 units, of which 49-51 units are in the major. Consult with an adviser for the specific number of units required in all areas of the degree, including GE and free electives.
