The core of the composition program at Boise State University is the creation and study of 21st century acoustic and electroacoustic art music. The department does not adhere to any particular compositional style or trend, and students are given the opportunity to discover and explore their unique creative voice and develop their musical and compositional skills through weekly individual composition instruction, group seminars and discussion, live performances of their original works, and appropriate coursework in music theory, history, orchestration, and electronic music. Composition students regularly collaborate with student and faculty musicians to present high-quality performances of original works, including two student composer chamber music concerts per year as well as performances and readings with the symphony orchestra, symphonic winds, jazz band, and choirs.
