North Eastern Hill University, popularly known as NEHU, is a public central university in Shillong, Meghalaya. Established in 1973, NEHU has two campuses, one at Mawkynroh-Umshing, Shillong, and another at Chasingre, Tura. The main campus is located in Shillong which is spread over 1225 acres of land. The university is recognized by the UGC and accredited with an ‘A’ grade by the NAAC. NEHU is ranked 80 among the top universities in India in NIRF Rankings 2023.
At present, NEHU has 79 affiliated colleges offering professional and other degrees. NEHU is also one of the first few universities to provide affiliation to ‘Minority Educational Institutions’ from all over the country. NEHU offers various general and professional courses across various disciplines like engineering, science, social sciences, commerce, law, management, humanities, and others. Furthermore, NEHU provides free coaching for civil service exams to SC and OBC students through its Dr. Ambedkar Centre. NEHU Admission Process
NEHU admissions to all UG, PG, and PhD programs are based on scores obtained in the entrance examination. The university accepts national-level entrance examinations such as CUET UG (for BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BSW, BALLB, BBA, BCA, and BTTM), JEE Main (for BTech), NATA (for B.Arch), GATE (for MTech), MAT (AIMA) (for MBA), and CUET PG (for PG courses MA, M.Com, M.Sc, M.Ed, MBA, MCA, and MSW). The final selection for admission is based on a cutoff released by the university based on scores obtained in the entrance examination. Candidates who secure the minimum cutoff marks released by the university are offered admission after receiving the admission fee.
Registrations for admission at NEHU usually begin in May or June every year. NEHU Placements
Every year, NEHU conducts campus drives for its students. The university has a ‘Career and Counselling Cell’ that provides training to its students and prepares them for their future job challenges. NEHU campus is well-equipped with all the facilities. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure ensures that the students are given a perfect learning atmosphere. Apart from its academic centres, NEHU Shillong campus has residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff, guest houses, shopping complex, bank, post office, research centres, and much more. - Hostel: NEHU hostel accommodates both, male and female, and national and international students. In total, it has 23 hostels and all the hostel rooms are well-furnished, well-ventilated, spacious, and provide sufficient water and electricity facilities.
- Library: NEHU has a central library in Shillong and a campus library in Tura. NEHU’s central library has a collection of over 2.9 lakh books, 38,000 bound periodicals, and subscription to 316 international and 366 Indian current journals.
