NMIMS Admission Process

MBA (Core and HR): SBM Mumbai

MBA admission at NMIMS SBM Mumbai has more than one stage. The first NMAT attempt is the only attempt used for admission. CAT, XAT, and GMAT scores are not accepted for the flagship MBA courses.

  • Eligibility: Students must have a graduation degree in any discipline with at least 50% aggregate marks.
  • Entrance: MBA Core needs a valid NMAT score of 209 overall with at least 62 sectional. MBA HR needs 190 overall with a 50 sectional minimum.
  • Competency Test: This carries 50% weightage in selection.
  • Personal Interview: This carries 20% weightage.
  • Academic profile: The remaining 30% weightage comes from academics.
  • Gender diversity: NMIMS policy reserves 30% seats for female candidates.

SBM Mumbai has a high selection cutoff. For MBA Core, General Category students usually need about 215 to 225 in NMAT for final selection, based on earlier cycles.

B.Tech and UG Programmes

NMIMS conducts its own computer-based entrance test, NMIMS-CET, for UG courses such as B.Tech, B.Pharm, BBA, B.Com, BBA-LLB, and B.Des. JEE Main scores are not used for B.Tech admission. SAT and ACT scores are accepted for international applicants.

  • Eligibility for B.Tech: Students must pass 10+2 with at least 45% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • Eligibility for B.Pharm + MBA: Students must pass 10+2 with at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics.
  • NMIMS-CET application fee: INR 2,000 per application.

Integrated and Postgraduate Programmes

For BBA-LLB and BA-LLB, NMIMS uses NMIMS-CET and not CLAT. PG courses in commerce, science, economics, and design follow programme-wise eligibility rules and may use NMIMS-CET or the relevant national entrance test. PhD admission is held separately through a university-level entrance test and interview.

NMIMS Scholarships

NMIMS students can apply for merit-cum-need support through university-linked and external scholarship routes. The Mumbai campus has the following main schemes.

NMIMS Campus and Infrastructure

The NMIMS Mumbai campus is located at Vile Parle West in Mumbai's western suburbs. Its built-up area is more than 5,50,000 sq. ft., spread across a multi-storey building complex with 17 constituent schools. Facilities include more than 60 air-conditioned classrooms, specialist laboratories, case-study rooms, and a central library with more than 50,000 volumes covering books, journals, and audio-visual resources.

Hostels are available for male and female students. NMIMS has 8 campuses in India: Mumbai (headquarters), Shirpur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Indore, Navi Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Sanand. The Mumbai campus functions as the academic and administrative centre.

Students can join chapters in finance, marketing, consulting, and social entrepreneurship. The student council organises annual business conclaves and inter-school fests. Across campuses, NMIMS has more than 900 faculty members, and many of them hold doctoral degrees.

NMIMS vs SPJIMR vs IMT Ghaziabad

NMIMS SBM Mumbai, SPJIMR Mumbai, and IMT Ghaziabad attract many of the same MBA aspirants, especially students using NMAT or CAT for leading private B-schools outside the IIMs. All three are AICTE-approved, have strong placement records, and fall in the INR 20 to 30 lakhs fee range.

NMIMS has the widest accreditation coverage because it is triple-accredited, and it also offers a large range of courses beyond management. SPJIMR has a higher NIRF Management rank and a stronger average CTC, helped by its smaller and more selective batch. IMT Ghaziabad gives students a wider CAT-based admission route, has a larger cohort, and has strong recruiter access in North India. For students depending on NMAT, NMIMS is the main high-ranked choice because SPJIMR and IMT do not accept NMAT.

According to the 2021 placement report, here is the average salary package received by NMIMS students.

NMIMS Mumbai Average Package:

Average CTC  INR 18.45 LPA
CTC for top 50 students INR 25.16 LPA
CTC for top 100 students INR 22.89 LPA
CTC for top 150 students  INR 21.55 LPA
CTC for top 200 students  INR 20.16 LPA

Check following video for a detailed review on NMIMS MBA

You should note that average salary is not the right measure of placements. There are students who get placement packages above INR 25 LPA. There are also students who get packages around INR 8-9 LPA. The right measure of placements is the median salary which isn’t usually mentioned explicitly often. But if you are aiming to secure a salary package above INR 16 LPA, you can certainly get it with strategic preparation.

The cutoff for NMAT 2022 varies in percentile for different NMIMS campuses (Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Indore, Navi Mumbai), ranging from 80 to 95 percentile, with NMIMS Mumbai having the highest cutoff. Meeting the NMAT cutoff is crucial for students to proceed to further selection stages, which include a Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI).

To determine the final merit list, NMIMS considers several factors, each assigned a different weightage:

  • NMAT Score - 70%
  • Group/Case Discussion - 10%
  • Personal Interview - 10%
  • Academic Performance - 5%
  • Work Experience - 5%

For further details regarding the NMAT NMIMS 2022 cutoff, students are advised to check the official website of the institute.

Yes, NMIMS, Mumbai is an excellent option for an MBA. Due to the locational advantage, it offers good placements and exposure. Huge list of companies visit the campus placement each year. NMIMS Mumbai placements highlights for 2022, show an average CTC of INR 19 LPA.

NMIMS Mumbai focuses a lot on academics outside of traditional classroom teaching. Their approach to academics is unique. You will learn through Bloomberg labs, the WeCare internship program, an unparalleled repository of e-journals and market data.

The only drawback for the institute is its huge batch size. This results in a dip in placements.

It is a difficult decision. NMIMS is a good b-school but it is a compromise compared to the top-tier management institutes in the country. Since you managed to get calls from XLRI and SPJIMR, there is a good chance that you will be able to score well in CAT/XAT next year.

If you decide to get admission to XLRI, or SPJIMR make sure that you graduate among the top 10-20% of the batch. An average student from XLRI or SPJIMR receives similar job opportunities as a student from NMIMS.

NMIMS Mumbai takes admission through NMAT. According to the cutoff trends, the expected cutoff for 2022 is 210+. But it is an oversimplified answer. Being one of the top B-School in the country, around 90000 applicants take NMAT every year. Only around 3000 students are called for the GD/PI round and around 600 students are shortlisted for the final selection. So, only 0.7% of students are selected from the students taking NMAT. In order to get admission, you will need to be among the top 1% of the students. Here are some helpful tips regarding the admission process.

NMIMS Mumbai Admission 2022:

  • NMIMS Mumbai allows you to take 3 attempts of NMAT. You should take advantage of all three of these attempts.
  • NMAT doesn’t have negative markings. So, you should try to attempt as many questions as you can.
  • The case discussion round will take place with around 12 other participants. You will be given a one-page case and 5 mins preparation time, before the 15 mins case discussion. Through this round, they want to see how you structure and approach a case.
  • After the case discussion round there will be a personal interview round with 3 panelists. They usually ask questions based on your CV and current affairs

Work hard to score above 210+ in NMAT and take full advantage of the 3 attempts. With strategic preparation, getting into NMIMS won’t be hard.

Here is an NMIMS interview experience of a student who appeared in the year 2018. If you have got calls for both MBA-Core and MBA-HR, this might be helpful for you.

For the written ability test, you'll be given a case and asked to write your views in 10 minutes. For instance, her case was about making it mandatory to own a dog due to an increase in heart patients, and she needed to express her opinion on the matter.

During the interview, you'll be called in one by one to a separate room on a separate floor. The panel generally has 3 members. You should greet the interviewers and answer confidently when they ask you to tell them about yourself.

They might ask whether you are a fresher or working, and if you are in transit, like the student in the story, they might ask why you left your job. Be honest and explain your reasoning. They might also ask what you know about the company you left, and why you left it. Be sure to answer the questions as best as you can, and don't hesitate to ask them to repeat or clarify anything that you don't understand. They might ask you about your hometown, so it's a good idea to know a bit about its history.

When they ask you the reason why you want to pursue an MBA, make sure to have a solid answer. They might also ask you about your understanding of HR, so be prepared to answer that question as well. If you're aiming for MBA-HR, make sure you have a clear understanding of what it entails, as the interviewers might ask follow-up questions. In any case, it's essential to stay calm and composed throughout the interview, even if they ask a difficult question.

In conclusion, the interview experience can be nerve-wracking, but it's essential to stay confident and composed. Make sure to prepare thoroughly for your interview and be ready to answer any questions they might ask. The most important thing is to remain honest and articulate.
