This is a very common dilemma among MBA aspirants who fail to make it into the institute of their choice. They are torn between going to an average B School or retaking CAT.

A smart way to come out of this dilemma is to toss the coin with these choices and the choice that comes to your mind when the coin is in the air is what you want to do. If you keep taking advice from everyone you will be left all the more confused.

A close friend of mine faced a similar Institute and his family advised him to take a drop year as NMIMS was not on his list of preferred institutes. He finally retook CAT and ended up in XLRI!

Ultimately, the right decision for someone may not be the right one for you, and vice versa. So choose wisely!

It is a difficult decision. NMIMS is a good b-school but it is a compromise compared to the top-tier management institutes in the country. Since you managed to get calls from XLRI and SPJIMR, there is a good chance that you will be able to score well in CAT/XAT next year.

If you decide to get admission to XLRI, or SPJIMR make sure that you graduate among the top 10-20% of the batch. An average student from XLRI or SPJIMR receives similar job opportunities as a student from NMIMS.

NMIMS is counted among the most reputed B-schools in India so there is no reason to not go for it. The only other option for you is dropping a year to improve your CAT score, although I will strongly advise against it. Many of my friends have made the same mistake and they regret it now.

The topper from my MBA coaching batch who used to score perfectly in mock CAT and tests received few callbacks from a few IIM and XLRI. He even converted to XLRI but decided not to join it as his goal was to get into IIM A, B, or C. Even after 4 tries he wasn’t successful in doing that and ended up saying goodbye to his MBA dream. There are many such examples.

Of course, things can go differently for you. But choosing NMIMS is definitely the safe option. Also, it is a decent management institute with good placement opportunities. If you are one of the best students at the institute, you will have ample opportunities.

Here are the recent placement statistics for NMIMS.

Particulars

NMIMS Mumbai

Average CTC

18.33 LPA

Highest Domestic CTC

38.57 LPA

Highest International CTC

58.61 LPA

So, weigh out the option and choose what seems best for you.
