I completed my BTech CSE from NIT Manipur in 2021. NITs consistently perform well in terms of placements. NITs fees are much lower compared to SRMIST and other private engineering colleges.

For your convenience, I have compiled the 2023 placement figures of all these colleges:

Parameters NIT Manipur *NIT Mizoram NIT Sikkim SRMIST Chennai (2024 Placements ongoing)
Highest/Average Package Highest: INR 47 LPA
Average: INR 9.7 LPA (2022 placements)
- Average: INR 8.50 LPA Highest: 57 LPA (2023)
Average: 6.88 LPA
Total Offers 147 - - 9,011 (2023)
No. of Companies Visited 37 30 - 1,311 (2023)
Top Recruiters Amazon, Discovery, EDFORA, INCREFF, Veritas, Trellix, among others. Virtusa, Optum-UGH, KEC International Ltd, C-DOT, Intellipaat, etc. Bosch, Capgemini, CGI, TCS, Deloitte, Wipro, Infosys, Aarti Industries Limited, etc. Cognizant, TCS, Wipro, Infosys, ICICI Bank, IBM, Axis Bank, Berger, etc.

*The 2023 placement figures might have increased for NIT Mizoram.

NIT Manipur has the best placement figures among the three NITs. As per NIRF 2023 Engineering Ranking, NIT Manipur ranks 95th, while NIT Sikkim ranks in the 151-200 bracket.

NITs are “Institutes of National Importance''. NITs are government colleges. They come next in line to IITs for their high brand value. Though SRM Chennai is a well-known college, it does not carry the same reputation as the IITs and NITs. Due to these factors, I had decided to pursue BTech CSE from NIT Manipur.

When it comes to deciding between SRM Kattankulathur (IT) and NIT Manipur/Mizoram/Sikkim (CS), one of the factors that are likely to weigh heavily on your mind is the placement prospects. Here are some key points to keep in mind when considering the placement record of these institutions:

  • Both SRM and NITs have a good track record of placements. Top companies from various industries, including IT, visit these campuses to recruit fresh talent for various roles.
  • NITs, being government-run institutions, have a better reputation among recruiters as compared to private colleges like SRM. NITs are considered among the top engineering colleges in India, and their graduates are highly sought after by top employers.
  • The reputation of the institution plays an important role in securing placements, especially in the initial stages of your career. Employers tend to view candidates from reputed institutions in a more favorable light and may be more willing to offer them better roles and higher salary packages.
  • NITs have a strong alumni network, and many of their graduates hold senior positions in top companies across various industries. This network can be a valuable resource for current students when it comes to finding job opportunities and building their professional network.
  • NITs also tend to have a more focused approach toward academics and research, which can benefit students who are looking to build a career in CS. The faculty members at NITs are typically highly qualified and have considerable industry experience, which can help students stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in the field.
  • While SRM also has a good record of placements, the fact that it is a private institution may be a disadvantage for some students, especially when it comes to securing placements in top companies. Private institutions may not have the same level of reputation and recognition as government-run institutions, which could potentially impact their graduates' job prospects.

In conclusion, while both SRM Kattankulathur (IT) and NIT Manipur/Mizoram/Sikkim (CS) have good placement records, NITs may be a better choice for students who are looking to build a career in CS and secure job opportunities with top companies. The reputation of the institution, the alumni network, and the faculty's expertise in research and industry trends all contribute to the stronger placement prospects of NITs.

National Institute of Technology, Mizoram is an autonomous college, affiliated to the All Indian Council for Technical Education. The college ranks 90th for engineering in India by JEE Cut-off 2019. The college offers B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering as a full-time four-year course at a fee of 5.43 Lakhs for the full period.

National Institute of Technology, Manipur ranks 89th and 158th for engineering in India by JEE Cut-off 2019 and NIRF respectively. The college offers B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering as a full-time four-year course at a fee of 5.51 Lakhs for the full period.

National Institute of Technology, Sikkim ranks 85th for engineering in India by JEE Cut-off 2019. The college offers B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering as a full-time four-year course at a fee of 5.38 Lakhs for the full period.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology 32nd in the category of universities according to the NIRF Rankings. The college offers B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering as a full-time four-year course at a fee of 10 Lakhs for the full period. The course is ranked 3rd, 29th, and 36th by Times, India Today, and NIRF respectively.

Placements:

NIT Mizoram: The course has an impressive placement rate of 89%.

  • Companies such as L&T, BPCL, and IBM come for placements during the placement season.

  • The average package offered for CS at the college is 6.5 LPA, with the highest package going up to a whopping 17.3 LPA.

NIT Manipur: The course has a placement rate of 60%.

  • Companies such as Accenture, BPCL, and Mahindra come for placements during the placement season.

  • The average package offered for CS at the college is 5 LPA, with the highest package going up to approximately 18 LPA.

NIT Sikkim: The course has a placement rate of 80%.

  • Companies such as McAfee, Samsung, and L&T come for placements during the placement season.

  • The average package offered for CS at the college is 7 LPA, with the highest package going up to approximately 20LPA.

SRM: The course has a placement rate of 95%.

  • Companies such as Amazon, Deloitte, and Dell come for placements during the placement season.

  • The average package offered for CS at the college is 5 LPA, with the highest package going up to approximately 42 LPA.

All four colleges are well-known engineering institutes. However, SRM University is a far superior choice with a much higher national ranking when compared to the NITs for CSE. The college has a top-notch placement cell which has a near-perfect placement rate and a much higher median salary. However, the NITs offer a similar return on investment due to a more economical fee structure.
