Typically, IIM Bangalore requires a minimum of 3 years of work experience for candidates to be eligible for their Fellow Program in Management (FPM) in Decision Sciences. However, it’s important to note that other parameters are also given due consideration such as academic background and achievements, professional experience and achievements.

The relevant work ex required for FPM in decision sciences might be a sort of Statistician or analyst coding in any data analysis language. I know many friends who have worked as data analysts in the past while some did not have any such coding background. That is why I don’t think any relevant work ex is required given that you have an excellent overall profile.

Decision Sciences is intensive Mathematics based field of study. To pursue this course you need to have a strong grasp of Statistics and Operations Research. For doctoral research, these are the areas that you need to study for your doctoral research.

Based on what I heard from my friends who attended the interview for FRM, I will say the interviewers are more concerned about your research aptitude and acumen in Mathematics rather than work experience. Relevant work experience can help your profile but it's not mandatory.

Decision Science is an intense field of Mathematics. Having said that, you really need to work extensively upon your Statistics & Operational Research as this would be a crucial part of your doctoral research ahead in the upcoming years.

A friend of mine had given an interview for Decision Science. And to his experience, all his interviewer cared about is his knowledge in Mathematics and his research aptitude. The interviewer didn’t care much about prior work experience.

It’s true that relevant work experience makes your resume look good but it is not a benchmark for selection.

So, relevant work experience can add value to your resume. But it won’t hurt you either if you don’t have any work experience, as long as your academic records are good.
