New Delhi: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) popularly known as Unipune is going to offer new courses in Museology. The university is offering a new research and study programme in Museology Science and Museum Management, in collaboration with Kelkar Museum. An MoU regarding this has been signed already at SPPU.
Unipune (SPPU) is offering this course to allow students to learn about this multidisciplinary subject that incorporates different features of history, archaeology, research and archiving and so on.
As per the initiative, a new department called ‘Museology and Heritage Study’ will begin at SPPU. SPPU courses on Museology will be offered through this department at multiple diploma and degree levels to interested and eligible candidates. According to the university officials, the courses are most likely to be offered from the next academic year.
New SPPU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karbhari Kale, is a lifetime member of the Kelkar Museum and one of the leading authorities for initiating and taking forward this collaboration between the museum and academics. The current SPPU Vice-Chancellor Professor Nitin Karmalkar, who is about to retire this week only, decided on setting up a new department for the study of museums.
“Through the initiative, new opportunities for research and employment will be generated for students. Kelkar museum is one of the prominent museums in the state and students will benefit from their experiences”, as stated by Professor Karmalkar.
Director of Kelkar Museum, Sudhanva Ranade also commented on this collaboration between the museum and the university,
“It was the desire of Raja Dinkar Kelkar who started the museum to offer an academic course in museology. We are glad to start this new inning in academics with SPPU”, as explained by the Director.

Unipune Admission 2022 to these UG and PG courses are offered on the basis of the candidates’ merit or their scores in entrance examinations. The university is known to accept scores of MHT CET, GATE, CAT / MAT/ ATMA/ XAT entrance exams. The university also offers Distance Education at the UG and PG levels.
