Top Kolkata Colleges have been demanding a centralized counselling system, reporting a large number of vacant UG seats even when registration deadline is nearing for the academic year of 2020-21.
As days pass, more Kolkata based colleges are adding to the clamour for a centralized counselling session for UG admission from 2021. Even this year, colleges are still expecting an approval from the state government and Calcutta University to conduct another round of admission.
The reason is owed to hundreds of seats falling vacant after several rounds of admission were done. This trail of vacancies surfaced soon after Calcutta University concluded its registration process and many students chose to skip it.
As per the principal of Lady Brabourne College, Siuli Sarkar claimed that about 150 seats remain vacant in her prestigious college. She believes, as the state asked for a declaration many students stayed away from registration and the vacancies went on rising from 107 to 150 at the fastest pace.

Earlier, the Higher Education Department of West Bengal asked applicants to submit declarations to curb students from blocking seats in multiple colleges. The declaration would state that they chose to retain a seat while canceling the others. However, it now seems that students did not take it the right way.
As registration deadline is drawing near, Lady Brabourne College is left with more than 150 vacant seats only in UG prograsms. She asserted, “This is a huge loss for the state considering the fabulous infrastructure we offer the students. We even have hostel accommodation.”

There were reports that students were not interested in taking admission in engineering colleges which would in other way help increase admissions in the colleges. She added, “It is terrible to know that we can’t offer seats to those who are genuinely interested and have been inquiring about any decision to reopen the admission process.”
Thus, Sarkar pointed out that a centralized counselling process will bring an end to the vacancy issue.
