New Delhi: Patna University has stated the creation of a new research and development cell (RDC) in response to a directive from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to encourage university research and use research results to help with social development.
A nine-member advisory committee for the RDC is presided over by Girish Kumar Chaudhary, the vice chancellor of the Patna University. Parimal Kumar Khan, a senior member of the Patna University zoology department faculty and a former Patna University development officer, has been named the RDC's director.
“The construction of RDC at this state's top university,” according to Patna University Vice Chancellor Girish Kumar Chowdhury, “will pave the way for combining important aspects of research, innovation, and technical growth for the society's overall progress.”
The National Education Policy 2020 strongly emphasizes fostering high-caliber research across the country and establishes the foundation for a more robust research ecosystem in higher education. The UGC previously published instructions for establishing RDC.
Other members of the research advisory council include the pro-VC Ajay Kumar Singh, the dean for student welfare; Anil Kumar, the senior faculty from the botany department; Birendra Prasad, the head of the geology department.
It also includes Atul Aditya Pandey, the head of the home science department, Anju Srivastava, the senior faculty from the Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, and the faculty from the education department, Khagendra Kumar (member secretary).
In an interview with TOI, the VC stated, "To improve research efforts on campus, Patna University handed a sum of INR 3 crore to this recently established organization on Tuesday. While INR 2 crore will provide financial support for small research projects that university professors will carry out, INR 1 crore will be used to publish research journals at the university level."
According to the speaker, the RDC would encourage the faculty to submit grant requests for societally relevant research to various funding organizations, including the UGC, DST, DBT, and ICSSR.
VC stated, "RDC will serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research collaborations and networking with other national and international institutions. To ease the exchange of students, scholars, and faculty, Patna University wants to develop relationships, collaborations, and combined ventures for cooperative research activities."
According to Patna University Development Officer Mr. Parimal Kumar Khan, more than 50 research ideas have been filed by university faculty over the last year. At least ten young professors have received startup grants from various organizations. The UGC and DST have also given several professors grants for research projects.
