Mangalore University has decided to introduce physical education as an elective paper for the UG students in the upcoming academic year 2020-21.
The 40-year-old Mangalore University has decided to initiate the physical education subject in the fourth semester, to follow PM Narendra Modi’s call for #FitIndia.
C K Kishore Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Education, and a member of council in the Mangalore University who has also served as in-charge vice-chancellor, and director of the department of physical education, insisted physical education to be as a subject for the undergraduate students.

Thus, the joint faculty of the Mangalore university decided to launch physical education as a subject at the UG level.
Surprisingly, Physical Education is already being offered for the postgraduate level students in the university.
As per the sources, Kishore Kumar has stated that the elective subject - physical education will be divided into four units, where the first two units will mainly focus on fitness and wellness theory.
While the other two units will focus on practicals i.e, to assess the student's fitness level.

Further, he added that the respective facilities and minimal infrastructure for the events that are included in the subject will be made available in the constituent and affiliated colleges of the university. The inter-collegiate and inter-university meets will also be conducted in the upcoming years.
Kishore confidentially expressed that the university will get a good response from the students regarding the introduction of the new elective subject, which will also create awareness about fitness and wellbeing among them.
At the start, it will be a little difficult for all the physical education directors to instruct the students to take the fitness challenges seriously. But, it's a win-win situation for everyone to remain fit and healthy, he concluded.
