IIIT Dharwad is taking this step as the use of drones is highly accepted and used in different sectors. Drones are used for taking photographs and videos and are used by the farmers of the Dharwad district to spray pesticides and insecticides on their farms for the last 3 years. Pocket drones are also in high use.

Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) has funded the lab at IIIT Dharwad. As per a senior professor of the institute, the lab aims at studying drone technology and taking it to the next level.

Drone technology will be used for works in agriculture and crops, for monitoring water bodies, and for delivering goods at doorsteps. The drone lab will also conduct study and research work to make the drone technology user-friendly and develop low-cost drones.

Prof Kavi Mahesh, Director of IIIT Dharwad, said that under corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds, KPTCL has given INR 25 lakh which will be used to set up the lab. “This will help the students to study and develop drone crafts,” he said.

“Drones can fly in any direction. There is a need to develop drones that can fly in narrow and lower areas. Once the lab is set up, its technology will be developed with the application of artificial intelligence (AI). Being a developing country, India needs such technology to boost its speed in development” , the Director added.

Also, admission to IIIT Dharwad has begun for the academic year 2022-2023. Candidates can visit the official website and check for admission updates and further information.
