SAT happens to be the most important exam for college admission but somehow SAT narrows down the possibility of the candidates in terms of college admission. So, an opinion is seen to be in right now that maybe it is high time to eliminate SAT – the decade-old exam for college admission.

The Covid-19 pandemic is pointing out that the globally top universities have temporarily removed the requirement of SAT scores in terms of admission. This not just for the admission of this year probably the admission of 2021 will be done without the submission of SAT scores. Universities like Harvard University, Columbia University, Brown University, and most others following the same admission policies right now.

A reason behind this is other entrance exams and language proficiency tests have announced the online alternatives where SAT has not any such editions. This is the only factor that makes SAT unnecessary in terms of admission. As most of the universities are making SAT optional this ear, it also appears that it was never the priority.

Also, it is opined that SAT cannot accurately depict the intelligence of the students. Along with this, it was found that students from specific backgrounds often perform better in SAT and it is because of the quality of preparation they can afford.

This is not just a mere observation – the Washington Post too mentioned that SAT is closely aligned with the family income of the candidates. To be more specific, the score differences of the African American and Latino candidates are pretty visible. Along with this, the cost of the exam happens to be too expensive for the candidates as well.

Also, SAT comes with unlimited takes which is an additional advantage to some candidates whereas it is a disadvantage to others who cannot afford it. In short, equality is somewhat destroyed in SAT which is another reason to ask for the elimination of the exam.

The testing method SAT is also under question because of its complicated calculation process. In SAT, a hard-working candidate with months of preparation may not score as expected. But, a candidate with visibly less preparation may score high and it readily invalidates years of diligent work of the hard-working candidate. SAT mainly tests the test-taking ability, not in-depth knowledge.

The optional SAT requirement in colleges have shown so many questions about its necessity and these are valid to some extent. Colleges and universities require a consistent performer with in-depth knowledge and experience. This is why the authorities made SAT optional this year. It indicates that the college and universities need their candidates to perform in any setting and handle any level of difficulty. The method of testing in SAT is way too unfair for several candidates. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SAT is eliminated and it is assumed that the necessity of SAT will not be required anymore once the pandemic gets over.

Probably there will be other alternatives or the universities will develop own way to check the college readiness of the candidates.
