The reading and the lecture both are pointing towards the value of television appearances by university professors. While, the author of the reading argues that they are very worthwhile for academics and their universities, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article believing that these appearances are not particularly useful.

The first claim is made by the author saying that the television appearances help university professors broaden their audience, and allows them to be viewed as experts in their fields by more people which leads to an increase of importance as academic professionals. The lecturer argues that professors by going on the television are viewed as entertainers rather than as true educators and that it could also disturb their ability to get backing for their work.

Secondly, the author portrays the benefit for the universities, as the professors upon making television appearances, increases the prestige of a university as one of its faculty members makes a high-profile media appearance bringing repute and fame to the university. However, the lecturer feels that universities may have to suffer because a “celebrity professors” do not have much time for their research as well as students as they spend a lot of time practicing, roaming and getting made-up for their appearances on the Television.

In conclusion, the author suggests that there is a net benefit to the public when a professor appears in the media. In contrast to this, the lecturer feels that television networks are just interested in the academic titles of the professors with the argument that the abbreviated presentations given on television are no more useful than what a regular reporter could deliver and could not be of any use for the students or general public.
