Monarch Butterflies or also known as Danaus plexippus are a kind of milkweed butterfly. The most common aspect of these types of butterflies is the wing structure which is recognized as black, orange, and white. It has a notable population in the US when it immigrates from northern to the central US and southern Canada to Florida. One important aspect of monarch butterflies is that they have been bred on the international space station as well.

Well, let us discuss how the name monarch came to exists. It was given under the honor of King William III of the UK or then known as England. King William was also known as Prince of Orange which is the color of the wings of these butterflies as well and thus the name came to existence. One of the species is D Plexippus which was described by Linnaeus in the time of 1758. These types of monarch butterflies were found in regions such as Hawaii, Australia, the Pacific, and likes of Spain and New Zealand.

Another type of species of monarch butterflies is known as D. Erippus which was again described by Pieter Cramer in the year 1775. Now, these types of butterflies were found in tropical and subtropical areas such as South America which includes Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and others. Anyway once the north monarch butterflies and the south monarch butterflies were like a single species at a time. Now the third and the last types of species of monarch butterflies are known as the Jamaican Monarch which was described by Jean-Baptiste Godart in the year 1819. These species were primarily found in Jamaica and in Hispaniola.

If we go into details about the subspecies of monarch butterflies, then there are six different subspecies of the first type of monarch butterflies. We can also look at the description of these monarch butterflies on how they look. Of monarch butterflies, their wingspan is from 8.8 to 10.1 cm. As we have discussed above the color of the wings of these butterflies is orange in color. On these wings the veins and margins are black and also there are two series of white color spots. The interesting part about these monarch butterflies is that their wing color changes from orange to more reddish in nature during the time of their migration. Now amongst all the different species of monarch butterflies, their wingspan is also different in size. For example, there will be a difference in wing size of the North American monarchs to their western counterparts. So it is safe to say that wing size and shape will be different between both migratory and non-migratory monarch butterflies.

The flight speed of a monarch is approximately 9km/h which is somewhat slow. If we compare the size of the monarch butterflies among the female and male counterparts we can see that males are slightly bigger in comparison with female monarchs. Not only in size the wing veins for males are more black in color and narrower in comparison with the females. While most of the monarch butterflies have orange wings in color, but there is one percent of the population which are known as White Monarchs and they are found in Australia to Indonesia. The life cycle of monarch butterflies can be described in a total of four stages of metamorphosis. The first stage is of EGGS where eggs are laid on a leaf of milkweed plant in the duration of Spring and Summer.

The second stage is of Larvae, in which the larvae will go through some five stages of growth sometimes as a caterpillar or sometimes as an instar. The third stage of metamorphosis for the monarch butterflies is known as PUPA. It is also known as chrysalis stage. In this stage monarch butterflies they shed their skin within a period of few minutes only. The Fourth stage is for adult butterfly when it emerges out of chrysalis. Monarch butterflies are much more vulnerable to extremes of weather or some predators. Monarch butterflies, both male and females mate more than once in their lifetime and their cycle of stages of metamorphosis begins.
