This particular TOEFL writing topic speaks about the characteristics of a good worker and how it affects the working culture of an office. A good worker will not only be helpful but also knowledgeable about what they do. TOEFL writing topics like these are popular since they are related to the work environment.

During our careers, we work with many different kinds of people. All of them have unique characteristics and personality traits. In your opinion, which of the following is the most important characteristic of a coworker?

  • a serious attitude regarding their work obligations
  • a willingness to learn new things
  • the ability to make other people laugh

You may choose more than one of these options. Use reasons and specific examples to explain your answer. Do not use memorized examples.

Answer:

These days we spend most of our time in our workplaces and therefore, the people with whom we are spending most of the time need to be affable with us. We have to get along with coworkers who give out professionalism and a willingness to pick new things. These two, according to me, are the main features that should be present in a coworker.

Check out:

Firstly, having a professional attitude is required for a positive work environment and motivating other coworkers. A professional coworker will never shrug off their responsibilities to others, and will always be in an enthusiastic mood to start with new work. This professionalism creates a healthy work balance. For instance, in my last company, there was a time when the work pressure increased drastically as it was a peak time for us. All of us maintained professionalism and worked extra hours to meet deadlines. No matter how overwhelmed we felt, we amped up the optimistic approach towards work and there were no complaints. We received ample numbers of unexpected orders and it was a tough grind for all of us, yet we passed that time.

Secondly, it is a prerequisite for coworkers to be amiable in their approach to learning; they should be willing to learn new things. They should not let their ego come in between their learning process. This can be well illustrated by one of the instances I saw before my eyes. When I was working in a publishing house, our firm hired a senior manager for handling the marketing department who had the experience of around 20 years. We all expected him to have a treasure trove of knowledge, but he ended up having antiquated knowledge. On top of that, he had an antagonistic character who didn’t like learning things from the newcomers as their ideas and mindset were always fresh. Eventually, our firm dismissed him as his behavior started affecting our whole organization in a toxic manner.

To conclude, I would state that both professionalism and the eagerness to learn new things should be present in the coworkers. In the absence of these two, it will be difficult for any workplace to maintain sanity.
