TOEFL Latest Changes

When you’re looking to study abroad, there are many exciting choices to be made, starting with which English-language test can get you where you want to go and give you the confidence to succeed in an academic English-learning environment. The TOEFL® test gives students that confidence, as well as a unique advantage at universities worldwide, including in the U.S., Australia and Canada.

Starting in August 2019, the TOEFL test introduced new enhancements for a better test experience, including a shortened test, MyBest™ scores and easier registration. The significant improvements to the TOEFL test experience make it an easy choice when selecting an English-language proficiency test.

Here’s more about the great benefits you can expect from the TOEFL iBT® test.

Shorter test; same fair results.

For all tests after August 1, TOEFL iBT testing time has been reduced by 30 minutes, to approximately 3 hours. Test takers may find they benefit from the shorter test through better focus and lessened fatigue. And, there is still no need to return for a second day, which is required by some other tests.

With no changes to the overall format, question types or scoring scale, it’s the same fair, reliable, preferred test, just with fewer questions in the Reading, Listening and Speaking sections. In other words, you will be able to prepare exactly the same way as before.

So relax, you’ve got this!

Send your top scores to your top schools.

Only the TOEFL iBT test has MyBest scores, which allow you to showcase your top section scores from all of your tests in the previous 2 years. This means you may be able to achieve the scores you need sooner—and take the test fewer times—to meet the score requirements at the schools in which you plan to apply. You can check those requirements here.

What’s more, admissions officers prefer MyBest scores. In a recent survey, 74% of admissions officers say they prefer to have MyBest scores on the TOEFL iBT score report.* And because of the reputation and high standards of the TOEFL test, you will stand out to universities when you apply.

All score reports sent after August 1, 2019, regardless of test date, will automatically include MyBest scores along with the traditional scores from your selected test date.

Did you take the test before August 1? No worries. You can still get a score report with MyBest scores after August 1, 2019 for tests taken before then. And, as always, official TOEFL test prep materials are available to help you prepare. So register today and take the test that can best put your plans in motion—the TOEFL test.
