TOEFL writing practice papers provide a wide range of topics that help candidates to improve their skills. This topic focuses on the different opinions of people on whether university students should attend the classes or not.

Topic: Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer.

Model Answer 1

There have been debates about whether students should attend the classes or not. In my view, it should be optional. It should be an individual choice and there shouldn't be any obligation on students to attend the classes. It is not at all right to make this happen forcefully unless they are interested and willingly want to attend the classes. Student’s interest in any course or subject plays a significant role. Not everyone has an interest in every class. Thus, students should choose their courses wisely. In some universities, many students skip the classes that they find uninteresting. Rather than attending an uninteresting class, they prefer to self-study.

Also, I think that self-studying adds up to the student’s ability to thrive. If an individual is capable enough to do so then he is qualified. With all the data available on the internet students can self-study and therefore they don’t need to attend the classes. In higher education, the focus should be more on the outcomes rather than the process. The students’ performances should be analyzed through their exams, not based on their attendance.

Additionally, students can gain some experience by working for a part-time job or internships. As the world is getting more and more competitive it is very important to have some sort of practical experience while still at the university. Practical knowledge is always better than just the academic knowledge gained from attending regular classes. It can help students in the future for job seeking. Students should spend their time wisely working at the university as it can really simplify the career beginning for graduates.

Finally, I would like to end by saying that students should act smartly and understand what is right for them. This is not the time where educators can make it mandatory for them to attend the classes and expect them to sit obediently. If the students find it not important they should do something else or stay at home. The time at the university is full of learning whether they attend the classes or not. So spending time on something productive will surely pay them off later. Therefore I totally agree that going to classes should be optional for students.

Model Answer 2

There are two different opinions about the same question. Some find it unnecessary to attend university classes regularly and for some, it is the most important thing. It differs from person to person. I think going to university and attending classes helps in the improvement of the individual in various aspects. The knowledge that students get from an experienced educator is one of the greatest benefits of attending the classes.

No matter how much information is available on the internet, sometimes students may find it difficult to understand something on their own. One person cannot be good at all subjects and some subjects are difficult to understand without attending the classes. For any doubt regarding the subject or course students can take help from the professors. Your educators have the easiest solutions for the most difficult questions. The things that an educator or professor can teach are something that can’t be obtained just by the books. Having an experienced person to learn from is something very significant. The benefit of a teacher's knowledge is very valuable.

Also, being in a class surrounded by people who have the same interests as you is a wonderful thing. Students can have group discussions, have fun activities, and more. Social interactions benefit students to enhance their personalities. The healthy atmosphere of the class makes the learning more fun and interesting. Also, a good teacher motivates the students to do well and helps them to achieve their goals. And they not only teach you from the material available in the textbook, but they also share various examples, their own experiences which help the students to have a deeper understanding of the subject.

Hence I think if there are few perks of not attending the classes daily doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t. It is of the utmost importance to go to classes regularly as it will have an overall impact on your development of career and as a person.
